Job Description

OHIO University Office of Information Technology is seeking a Senior VoIP Engineer. The Senior VoIP Engineer is responsible for maintaining the infrastructure that supports Ohio University's Cisco Unified Communications system across 10 campuses. Which is comprised of over 7300 telephone lines, 4500 voice mail boxes, and 10 call centers. Additional services and features for which the Senior VoIP Engineer is responsible include e911, FAX services, Jabber, Distance learning support, softphones, conference phones, paging services, long distance services and billing solution integration, Local and Long Distance carrier interface as well as specialty telephone lines for fire and security alarms, Blue Light emergency phones, etc.; and miscellaneous accessories such as headsets and speakerphones.
The duties of the Senior VoIP Engineer include the following:

  • General administration of Ohio University's voice system (hosted on Cisco UCS /VMWare infrastructure).
  • Implement requests for moves, additions, and changes to ACD , IVR , and voice mail services.
  • Monitor voice systems performance and perform capacity planning and traffic analysis to maintain quality of service.
  • Administer and monitor voice system trouble ticketing.
  • Plan for and schedule preventive maintenance and upgrades for voice systems equipment and software.
  • Control and contain emergency repairs.
  • Implement policies and procedures to actively monitor and prevent toll fraud, preserve voice system security, and ensure appropriate use.
  • Track voice system usage and prepare detailed reports.
  • Provide voice system usage data and cost information to accounting personnel for reconciliation of billed charges from carriers. Work with accounting personnel to ensure that appropriate discounts have been extended by the carriers to the CRC based on usage.
  • Conduct periodic voice equipment and service audits.
  • Work closely with other IT Administrators to coordinate work efforts and understand major components of their systems (i.e. network team).
  • Communicate and explain planned and unplanned maintenance and outages.
  • Maximizing the effectiveness and usability of the voice systems and equipment.
  • Monitoring and administration of the e911 system.
  • Participate in short term planning, as well as, long term strategic planning for developing service enhancements and or new service development.
  • Participate in project planning including scheduling and budgetary forecasting.
  • Vendor Management
    o Manage voice systems vendor and voice carrier relationships.
    o Implement requests for moves, additions and changes to toll free and local voice networks.
    o Interact with carriers, voice systems service vendors, and equipment vendors to maintain existing services, enhance and implement call handling capabilities, and to order new services.

    Other requirements of the position include:

  • Employees must possess a cell phone that can be used to business purposes such as making and receiving telephone calls and/or text messages.
  • Employees must participate in 24/7 On-Call rotations and must respond to service relayed issues during off hours, weekends and holidays.
  • Employees must be able to travel to remote campuses, vendor locations and training facilities. This may include over-night stays.
  • Employee must perform other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    EDUCATION : Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology or other related discipline.

  • 6+ years in the Information Technology or related field.

    An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Expert knowledge of:
    o Cisco Unified Communications Manager 10x
    o Cisco Unity Connection 10x
    o Cisco Contact Center Express ( UCCX ) 10x
    o Cisco IM & Presence 10x
    o Cisco ISR routers and analog gateways/routers
  • Advanced knowledge of Cisco Unified Collaboration solutions such as TMS , VSC , bridging technologies and expressways.
  • Advanced knowledge of e911, preferably RedSky Technologies e911 solution. Familiarity with Intrado and major carrier e911 is a plus.
  • Advanced knowledge of efax solutions - xMedius is preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of routing and switching related services in support of voice services including Voice VLANs, DHCP scopes, Quality of Service ( QOS ), ACLs and dynamic routing.
  • Advanced knowledge of VoIP (G.711/722/729 codecs, H.323 and SIP )
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Visio, and Outlook
  • Advanced knowledge of telephone circuit provisioning (i.e. T1/ PRI /DS-3, etc.)

    Pay Rate

    $66,550 - $88,179 depending on candidate's experience and qualification. Employees also enjoy a generous benefits package including health benefits, paid time off, and education benefits for employees and qualified dependents
