Responsibilities

The Information Assurance Research Group has an outstanding opportunity for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual with exceptional technical skills that can be applied in cyber security research. One of the primary goals of this research is to build an intelligent control system that will make an enterprise network and associated computer systems resilient to attack.

This research seeks to change the Computer Network Defense paradigm by integrating adaptive defense and resilience within the defensive fabric of large and complex mission systems.  This research will build upon a fused and contextualized understanding of diverse cyber event data to reason dynamically about the state of the system, plan and execute defensive actions, and establish models for understanding and predicting adversary behavior.  Moreover, this research seeks to engage the adversary through thoughtful but unpredictable system-level change and manipulation vice focusing on traditional end-point or perimeter blocking mechanisms.  Strategies to engage potential adversaries earlier in the cyber kill chain as a way to build confidence and disambiguate malicious from non-malicious actors is fundamental to cyber resilience.  Ultimately, proven strategies and techniques to measure and improve cyber resilience through adaptive reasoning and response actions must be developed and used to guide the evolution of this research portfolio.

Responsibilities:

The selectee for this position will support and lead research using deep technical skills in computer science, applied mathematics, or related engineering & physical sciences.  The   selectee will be required to lead and support development of concepts and prototype demonstrations of adaptive cyber defense at an enterprise-level.  The selectee will conduct and maintain effective interpersonal relationships at all organizational levels and work with researchers across the community. The selectee must have good oral and written communication skills, and an ability to be a team player with subordinates and peers.  Candidates must show strong leadership and technical skills to influence research decisions within NSA and the US Govt S&T Cyber community.  The selectee will be expected to perform independent research, participate in technical reviews, briefings, conferences, and working groups; conduct demos for visitors; participate in technical exchanges with a variety of R&D organizations across the DoD, Intelligence Community, National Labs, Military Service Labs, and academia. You will have opportunity to surround yourself with leading thinkers in the research community that will engage and challenge you in this emerging area as we seek to move beyond the traditional IT security solutions of the day. The selectee will be expected to pursue technical growth on related computer security topics and pursue professional development and training.

The selectee will be expected to apply technical skills across a broad range of technical disciplines to advance this area of research.  Desired skills and background include:

- Cyber security / Computer Network Defense research
- Network and computer systems architectures
- Multi-discipline research collaboration

Degree must be in Computer Science (CS). Related fields (e.g., Engineering, Mathematics) may be considered relevant if the programs contain, at minimum, a concentration of courses in the following foundational CS areas: algorithms; computer architecture (not network architecture); programming methodologies and languages; data structures; logic and computation; and advanced mathematics (for example, calculus, discrete mathematics). Information Technology (IT) or Information Systems (IS) degrees may be considered relevant if the programs contain the amount and type of coursework equivalent to a CS major.
