DESCRIPTION
Under supervision of the Lab Manager, the incumbent independently performs laboratory functions that involve a wide variety of standard human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV) qualitative assays. Assists the Principal Investigator (PI) and Lab Manager in conducting experiments investigating human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) variation present in CSF, blood, gut tissue and semen. Will engage in highly specialized technical laboratory procedures such as PBMC processing, gut tissue extraction, viability, cell culture, DNA, RNA extraction and storage. Duties include sample processing, preparation of various types of samples for storage and dangerous goods shipping. Primary responder to cell inventory for the entire AntiViral Research Center (AVRC). The incumbent will develop new and modify existing standard procedures to meet the needs of complex research projects. Will also be responsible for other laboratory tasks including the maintenance of an accurate laboratory notebook, ordering supplies, preparation of solutions, maintaining a clean and orderly laboratory area and minor equipment maintenance, and other lab tasks as needed. This position will involve community based study visits that will require phlebotomy skills. Other duties assigned as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Theoretical knowledge of biology, molecular biology, or other related fields or Bachelor's degree or equivalent education and experience. Must be a certified Phlebotomist and hold a valid California Phlebotomy license (CPT). Experience with DNA extractions from CSF, Blood, Gut and Seminal fluids. Demonstrated experience in the operation of scientific and experimental laboratory equipment necessary for the successful completion of the research design. This includes hand pipettors, pipetmans, pH meters, Mettler analytical and top-loading balances, plate washers, plate readers, agarose gel apparatus, thermocyclers, incubators, and various types of centrifuges. Familiarity with processing blood, CSF, seminal fluids, seminal plasma, seminal cells, gut tissue cells infected with HIV and other human retroviruses. Demonstrated experience working in a clinical research setting. Ability to work independently and cooperatively. Ability to work as a team along with others; follow instructions and/or explain protocols to others. Ability to communicate effectively with all level of faculty, staff and students. Demonstrated experience with DNA gel electrophoresis and detecting DNA bands on gels. Demonstrated knowledge of sterile culture and aseptic techniques. This includes preparation of buffers and reagents. Ability to communicate clearly and to keep organized, neat, and accurate laboratory records and notebooks. Effectively and accurately document research procedures. Ability to read, comprehend, and discuss research materials. Experience with the operation of a personal computer and software application such as MS Word, and Excel. Enthusiasm for learning and a genuine interest in scientific research. Willingness and ability to learn new skills, research methods, and scientific principles. Ability to work with a variety of personnel from different laboratories. Knowledge of proper manipulation of infectious specimens such as the use of Biological Hazard Level II and III bio-containment facilities and cabinets, decontamination of work areas and proper laboratory attire. Demonstrated experience in high throughput specimen processing and cell extraction. Ability to make technical observations and identify issues related to projects. Ability to modify standard procedures to meet the needs of research projects. Organizational skills including the ability to organize and adapt the work schedule to accommodate experimental design. Must have access to reliable transportation. Must have a valid CA driver's license and acceptable driving record.

Pay Transparency Act Annual Full Pay Range: $60,301 - $97,008 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%) Hourly Equivalent: $28.88 - $46.46 Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
