IEM is seeking General Reserve Corps members to deploy and support our clients during emergencies, including natural disasters, human-caused events, and humanitarian crises, in communities nationwide. Selected Candidates for this role must have the ability and willingness to deploy nationally within 24 to 48 hours of notification, for a minimum of 30-days or longer (anticipated once per year but opportunities may exceed this). Your employment is dependent on the needs of our clients. When not activated, this role will become Part Time with limited or no hours worked.

General Reserve Corps members, who are response professionals, are often assigned to Emergency Operation Centers (EOCs) or field sites. They may provide backfill support, serve as additional staffing, or manage operations for some of the most significant human-centered disasters facing our nation.

Primary Location:

  • Candidates can originate from anywhere in the United States
  • Candidates in the Pacific Northwest region, Boston, MA, Washington, DC, and Colorado are currently preferred. Once hired, you will deploy (travel) across the United States and its territories to client sites, as needed.
  • You will work remote from home, as needed, when not deployed.
  • All remote work environments require the ability to maintain minimum Internet speeds of 25 Mbps upload and 3 Mbps download, as well as a ping rate of 100 ms or less during working hours, regardless of the type and number of devices using your Internet connection. You must also have account privileges and access to your Internet service provider account during working hours for the purpose of maintaining the Internet connection, if needed.

Travel Requirements:

  • This position will require work to be conducted onsite and may require work on weekends or more than 40 hours per week. Travel and other expenses are reimbursable in accordance with Federal Travel Regulations.
  • All interested candidates must be willing to work on site for the duration of each disaster assignment.

Essential Functions:

  • Deploy in support of migrant relief efforts, homelessness assistance, and sheltering operations, applying cultural sensitivity, professionalism, and adaptive communication skills.
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal and cross-cultural communication in diverse operational environments.
  • Ensure compliance with contractual obligations and maintain operational integrity.
  • Manage stakeholder relations, addressing both operational and logistical needs.
  • Utilize the chain of command effectively, delegating tasks, monitoring progress, and escalating concerns as necessary.
  • Adapt to various roles and leadership structures, working outside of traditional comfort zones.
  • Commit to long-hour shifts in austere environments, adjusting to varying contract requirements.
  • Leverage technology tools for remote and in-person coordination with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Operate effectively in ambiguous environments, including EOC trailers, tents, hotels, convention centers, warehouses, and repurposed facilities.
  • Apply specialized expertise in hazmat operations, communicable disease surveillance, grant writing, debris removal, quality assurance, mass care coordination, and other emergency response efforts.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and staff augmentation to FEMA Joint Field Offices (JFOs) and state/local Emergency Operations Centers (EOCs).

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Humanitarian or shelter experience
  • 1-4 years of Disaster Response / Emergency Response operations
  • Ability to meet and maintain deployment physical/medical standards.
  • Must be able to work up to 12-hours per day, ample amounts of that time on your feet, and lift 50 pounds to waist-level.
  • Must be able to be away (deploy) from home location at minimum 30 days without return.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual communicator
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree
  • 5-10 years of experience in contingency operations, case management, or coordination, operations, or people management.

  • Monthly cellphone stipend or IEM-issued smartphone (your choice).

Additional Travel Information:

Situational Awareness: Conditions may be austere including prolonged exposure to excessive heat and cold, prolonged sun exposure, and no heat or air conditioning. Other considerations include air quality issues, unique health circumstances, and direct service and support of underserved populations.
