Description

The City of Irvine seeks ten (10) collaborative and innovative professionals to take a role of Librarian in the development of Irvine's new, locally operated and world class public library system. The Librarians will serve the Senior Librarian and Principal Librarian, building upon established community connections and provide organizational leadership to strategically support the development of a phenomenal municipal library operation. The Librarians, under direction, provides excellent customer service while performing professional and technical library work including programming, collection development, and community engagement. Please note that this position will require occasional evening and weekend shifts.

Librarian - Customer Experience, Borrower Services

This recruitment will establish an Eligibility List for the Library Services Coordinator (Librarian) position, which will expire on 3/10/26.


Your Impact
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Recommends print and digital library materials for acquisition and deselection; uses data to evaluate the collection.
  • Evaluates community needs, plans and implements a variety of library programs and services to serve the local community.
  • Serves as a liaison between the library and community groups; participates in community and outreach events; attends workshops and conferences; represents the library at professional and community meetings and events.
  • Participates in the compiling and analysis of reports and statistics.
  • Exercises general and direct supervision of staff and/or volunteers.
  • Advises, assists, and demonstrates the use of library services to library customers.
  • Assists library customers by locating and recommending materials; provides technology and reference assistance to library customers.
  • Interprets and applies library policies and procedures for library customers; responds to suggestions, requests or concerns from library customers.
  • May serve as person-in-charge of a library location as needed

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in library services or field related and two years' experience in library services or community services, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities. Possess, or ability to obtain a valid California driver's license.
  • Ability to possess or obtain a First Aid and CPR certification within three months of employment required.
  • Ability to exert very moderate physical effort in sedentary to light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, carrying, pushing and pulling.
Best Fit
  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association-accredited program is highly desirable.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service by meeting the public with courtesy and sensitivity.
  • Ability to apply City Library policies and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing to a diverse audience.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of professional library services.
  • Ability to perform complex professional library tasks; implement library programs and services applicable to the needs of the local community.
  • Ability to direct and train assigned library staff or volunteers.

The selection process will include an examination and a background investigation prior to appointment. This recruitment may establish an eligibility list to fill future positions in similar and/or lower classifications within the organization.
