Summary of Job Duties:The Phlebotomist supports the Women and Infants Service Line Outpatient Laboratory through proper phlebotomy techniques as well as proper specimen accessioning, processing and related activities, while providing Patient Family Center Care. Qualifications:

Required:

High School diploma/GED

2 years experience as phlebotomist required

Excellent communication skills, basic computer skills, strong work ethics and accountability.

Ability to Follow Oral Instruction, Read and Write

Preferred:

Phlebotomy Certificate

Experience in an ambulatory care setting

Additional Information:

Responsibilities:

  • Performs venipuncture (inserting needles into veins) for blood collection from patients.

  • Collects blood samples in various types of tubes or containers, ensuring proper labeling and handling.

  • Addresses patient concerns or fears related to blood draws.

  • Maintains professional and empathetic communication with patients, especially when dealing with difficult or anxious individuals.

  • Ensures that the samples are accurately labeled with patient information to avoid errors.

  • Maintains and clean phlebotomy equipment, including needles, tubes, and other supplies.

  • Performs basic troubleshooting of equipment in case of malfunction and report issues to the supervisor or management.

  • Follows strict protocols for infection control, including using personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensuring sterilization of tools.

  • Ensures compliance with regulatory standards, such as HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) for patient confidentiality.

  • Monitors and reports any adverse reactions during or after the procedure, such as hematomas, fainting, or dizziness.

  • Maintains accurate records of patient information and blood collection details.

  • Documents any complications or issues encountered during blood collection.Help train and mentor new or junior phlebotomists, showing them proper techniques and protocols.

  • Provides guidance on handling difficult veins or special patient cases, such as pediatric or geriatric patients.

  • Monitors inventory levels for phlebotomy supplies and ensure that stock is sufficient.

  • Collaborates with lab technicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure the smooth operation of the blood collection and testing processes.

  • Communicates any concerns or abnormalities observed during the blood collection to the appropriate team members.

  • May perform other duties as assigned.
