The CPS Energy Internship Program is designed to meet the industry's rapidly changing workforce needs by providing local San Antonio high school and college students with public utility career experience. Through the internship program students are paired with a mentor to acquire meaningful hands-on experience that expands their understanding of how the industry works and exposes them to essential skills they must acquire or develop to be successful. The internship is not only meant for the intern to learn how to do things, but to also understand the rationale behind the strategies that are being used.

Position Summary

The CPS Energy internship program is designed to meet the industry's rapidly changing workforce needs by providing local San Antonio college students with public utility career experience. Through the internship program students are paired with a mentor to acquire meaningful hands-on experience that expands their understanding of how the industry works and exposes them to essential skills they must acquire or develop to be successful. The internship is not only meant for the intern to learn how to perform, but to also understand the rationale behind the strategies that are being used.The Power Generation Engineering Intern will work under the guidance of an engineering mentor to support Power Generation business needs. Interns will be assigned projects to improve power plant operations, maintenance and/or performance. This internship will permit exposure to the student's field of study and provide meaningful experience for future professional employment.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Utilize engineering and project management skills for project development and/or execution. Identify and incorporate new ideas and technologies for project development and recommend economically viable options.Create business justifications, budget estimates and schedules for new projects.
  • Develop equipment specifications for replacement/upgrade of existing equipment and scopes of work for planned maintenance activities.
  • Provide general support to Power Generation Engineers and respond to daily plant operational needs to ensure safe, efficient and reliable plant operation and production. Support analysis and troubleshooting for operations and maintenance and develop recommendations for improvement.
  • Work in a team environment and collaborate with other Power Generation and CPS Energy business areas to achieve desired results.Interface as a representative of CPS Energy with consultants, vendors, contractors, and other companies.
  • Recommend/implement solutions for improved performance and employee health and safety to support a zero accident/incident goal.
  • Initiate, implement, and complete project work as assigned.

Minimum Skills
Personal Computer Usage
Minimum Knowledge and Abilities
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Must be currently enrolled in a related discipline.
A minimum GPA of 2.5.
Must currently reside within 120 miles of CPS Energy Headquarters.
Demonstrated leadership potential.
