The Language Technologies Institute (LTI) at Carnegie Mellon University is a world-renowned research and education hub at the forefront of natural language processing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and human-computer interaction. Established within the School of Computer Science, LTI pioneers innovative approaches to understanding, processing, and generating human language in both written and spoken forms.

We are seeking a Systems Software Engineer to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and testing software systems and applications for research projects in Prof. Chenyan Xiong's lab in the Language Technologies Institute at CMU, which may include:

  • Full-stack development for research in user-facing systems and interactive deep-learning systems.
  • Creating large-scale software systems for aiding research in large language models and retrieval systems.
  • Creating and maintaining websites for lab-related projects
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Perform activities such as extended use of a computer monitor, extensive reading, transcribing, analyzing data and figures, visual inspection involving small defects, small parts and/or operation of machines.

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field required; Master's degree preferred.

Experience: 1 to 3 years of full-stack development experience with the following tools and/or programming languages:

  • Tools: React, Node.js, Docker, Elasticsearch, SQL, and API usage
  • Languages: Python, Java, HTML/CSS

A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

Requirements:

  • Successful pre-employment background check

Additional Information:

  • May require travel to and/or work at off-campus or remote locations.
  • Evening and weekend work may occasionally be required.
