Engineering Project Manager

Job Summary:

The successful candidate will primarily be responsible for managing the technical functions for multiple development-stage renewable energy projects. The initial and primary assignment will be in support of utility scale battery energy storage systems ("BESS") projects, but may also include solar, wind, natural gas, and other energy technologies, as needed

These technical functions include: technology evaluation/selection, performance estimation, conceptual design engineering, land acquisition guidance, facilities layout development, permitting support, capital and operating cost estimates, project schedules, contracting for engineering design services, and design reviews.

The candidate will be a key member of interdisciplinary business teams. As such, the candidate will work closely with other departments and stakeholders, including: development, public relations, finance, transmission/interconnection, environmental, real estate, third party consultants, and counterparties (suppliers, customers, partners, and lenders).

The successful candidate will also perform technical due diligence of potential project and asset acquisitions and support/manage project construction as needed.

Some domestic travel will be required.

Essential Job Functions:



  • Oversee project development engineering for energy projects (primarily utility scale battery energy storage projects but also solar, wind, and other energy technologies).
  • Oversee constructability and permitting assessments for project sites.
  • Identify and recommend innovative solutions to resolve unique design issues to (a) maximize project capacity and/or efficiency while (b) minimizing scope, schedule, and cost.
  • Define the scope and sequence of development engineering tasks; source and manage external consultants performing the work.
  • Compile and maintain project schedules in software such as Microsoft Project. Use schedules to drive daily/weekly/monthly priorities.
  • Maintain an organized and clearly documented set of project-specific technical deliverables.
  • Develop capital and O&M cost estimates for project configurational options (capacities, technologies, arrangements, etc.).
  • Work with consultants to prepare performance estimates using advanced software models.
  • Stay abreast of latest technology developments and suppliers for relevant asset types. Conduct technology evaluation and selection, including commercial/economic considerations.
  • Compile technical bid (RFP) documentation (scope and specs) for Engineering design, major equipment, and construction services; solicit and condition bids toward selection and contracting.
  • Prepare technical risk assessments for development projects and potential acquisitions
  • Provide technical support for project off-take agreements and contract negotiations.
  • Dependable, reliable and predictable attendance is required.
  • Travel to project sites and counterparty offices will be required.


Education/Experience/Skills

Basic Requirements:



  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited institution. (Electrical Engineering preferred.)
  • A minimum of 5+ in renewable energy sector project engineering and/or development roles.
  • Total of 10+ years of technical experience engineering-related roles.
  • Excellent MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and Google Earth.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Detail-orientation and an analytical mindset.
  • Proactive approach toward seeking out and solving challenging problems.
  • Strong work ethic, organized, disciplined, and team player.
  • Outstanding ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-tasked environment.
  • Prioritize safety in all personal and professional situations.


Preferred Requirements:



  • Experience with battery energy storage technologies, project development, design, and installation.


  • Project development experience including land acquisition, public relations, and permitting.


  • Familiar with rules, regulations and standards that impact the power industry.
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software such as ArcGIS or QGIS.
  • Experience with Project Schedule software such as Microsoft Project.
  • Excellent interpersonal, motivational, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact and work with multi-functional interdisciplinary teams.
