Responsibilities

Job Summary

The SBA Underwriter performs credit underwriting to support the loan origination process for SBA loans, while adhering to credit risk standards.

Salary Range

The salary range for this position is $51,700./Yr. - $153,000/Yr. Final compensation will be determined by location, skills, experience, qualifications and the career level at which the position is filled.

Key Accountabilities

SBA Credit Underwriting

    Underwrites loans with aggregate credit exposure based on complexity limits.
  • Compiles, analyzes, and documents loan data and credit risk, borrower and property information, and coordinates activity in support of credit approval process.
  • Investigates credit standards and determines credit worthiness and understands financial statements and reports for specific area of business.
  • Performs research and analysis related to loan projects, such as industry studies and management reports, when necessary.

SBA Credit Underwriting (SR Position Only)

  • Analyzes most complex financial and credit information for larger commercial business or high net worth customer loans according to business unit standards.
  • Underwrites high net worth loans with higher aggregate credit exposure and may manage a more complex portfolio and customer base.
  • Negotiates loan provisions, when needed.
  • Mentors or reviews analysis of less experienced underwriters

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree with concentration in Finance, Accounting or Economics and/or H.S. Diploma or GED with equivalent experience
  • 4+ years of experience in one of the following: underwriting, financial analysis or deal structuring in financial services, private banking, corporate/investment banking or capital markets
  • Competence in formal writing, organizational abilities of material, presentation skills, grammatical structure and accuracy, syntax and vocabulary; an ability to construct coherent sentences and paragraphs; technical financial writing experience is a plus.
  • Ability to make decisions independently in areas that may not necessarily be clearly defined.
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple tasks/projects and deadlines in an independent manner.
  • Strong analytical skills with high attention to detail and accuracy
  • Demonstrates a strong desire to be an effective member of a team. Characteristics include reliability, accountability, strong interpersonal and communication skills, as well as a willingness to assist others.

SBA Underwriter roles may vary - this position may be filled at a different level depending on the candidate's qualifications and relevant experience. Factors may include but are not limited to: previous SBA experience, depth and breadth of previous or current institution size - the same role for many years or a variety of roles in the same space over a number of years, skills, knowledge, underwriting expertise, previous performance and success factors, proven ability to collaborate to achieve sales targets year over year, education/certification/training (NAGGL desired), length of time in SBA industry as well as familiarity and expertise with in SBA 7a loan documentation and credit collateral procedures and SBA Standard Operating Procedures.

  • 6+ years of experience in one of the following: underwriting, financial analysis or deal structuring in financial services, private banking, corporate/investment banking or capital markets
  • Advanced knowledge of SBA 7a loan documentation and credit collateral procedures desired
  • Advanced knowledge of SBA Standard Operating Procedures desired
  • Prior SBA training through National Association of Guaranteed Lending (NAGGL) desired
