Critical Care Advanced Practice Provider - Lead (PA or NP)

The Medical Critical Care Service (MCCS) is comprised of board-certified and hospital-employed critical care physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners who are dedicated to the academic mission at Inova.

The critical care physicians, also known as intensivists, conduct combined management and teaching rounds every day and serve as the attending of record for the majority of patients on the teaching service. These intensivists also administer the ICU house staff lecture series. The educational director for the rotation is a member of this group and attends monthly Inova Fairfax Hospital Department of Medicine academic meetings to ensure an outstanding experience for the house staff during the rotation.

Advance practice providers in this section treat patients who often require life support and attend multidisciplinary team which includes our physicians-in-training, physicians, nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, dietitians, social workers among others. They also collaborate with physicians from other medical and surgical specialties to assure best possible outcomes of critically ill patients. We invite patients and family representatives to attend daily bedside rounds in order to facilitate communication, understanding, and participation in decision-making.

Position details:

* Provide a consistent and efficient line of communication between the MCCS CICU Medical Director, the CICU leadership group, and the CICU APPs, leading to a better organized and informed APP practice

* Assure the communication of quality, performance, and documentation expectations set by the MCCS leadership and Director for Advanced Practice Provider across the APP Group

* Facilitate communication between CICU leadership, the Director of Advanced Practice Provider to help ensure consistency of CICU APP practice model within the larger critical care practitioner practice model across the system

* Facilitate the involvement of all members of CICU APP group with the quality, process improvement, and educational initiatives of the CICU

* Maintain clinical involvement on CICU APP shifts

* Represent the CICU and APP group within IHVI Critical Care APP Leadership and contribute to integrity and growth of IHVI Critical Care Advanced Practice.

* Involvement with the creation and management of the orientation process for the CICU APP team

* Inclusion in all interviews for those seeking employment with the CICU APP team

* Facilitate delegation of certain roles of the CICU APP team at large as agreed upon by the team, MCCS CICU Medical Director, and Director of Advanced Practice Provider

* Responsible for the agenda and leading the weekly CICU APP meeting and CICU APP team lead report

Clinical Duties And Shift Expectations:

* The lead position is expected to weight clinical practice during night shift or day shift

* Rotate across weekends and nights, if needed, with an adequate frequency to understand specific needs of those shifts, making himself/herself available for communication of needs/problems/needed improvements to follow up with the MCCS Medical Director and/or the Director of Advanced Practice Provider.

* Allow for least 12 hours per month of administrative/nonclinical time to accomplish tasks and follow up for projects, research, and leadership communication in order to facilitate an organized

Minimum Requirements:

Certification - Basic Life Support prior to start; Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (for Critical Care) upon start; Pediatric Advanced Life Support (for Pediatrics) upon start

Licensure - Licensed Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner; If Nurse Practitioner: RN Compact License(depending on State of primary residence) AND a license (or eligibility for) as a nurse practitioner or physician assistant in the Commonwealth of Virginia AND a "Practice Agreement" signed by sponsoring/ supervising physician(s), AND a written "Scope of Practice/Protocol" signed by the supervising physician, AND "Drug Enforcement Administration License" (if prescribing controlled substances).

Experience - Prior experience required.

Education - For Nurse Practitioners: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and Master's Degree in Advanced Clinical Practice or graduate of a post-masters certificate program for nurse practitioners, OR certificate from an education program that is accredited by the Council of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs/Schools, American College of Nurse Midwives, American Association of Colleges of Nursing of the National League for Nursing; For Physician Assistants: Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program

3 years of experience as NP/PA
