Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Senior Benefits Specialist for the administration of the university's comprehensive benefit program, using various communication methods to work with a diverse university population. The Senior Benefits Specialist plays a critical role in ensuring the compliant administration of the university's comprehensive benefits program, in alignment with New Jersey State statutes, university policies, and collective bargaining agreements. The role is also central to planning and executing annual orientation sessions for special employee populations (e.g., Postdocs, TA/GAs, new faculty), and is the primary coordinator of the annual benefits fairs held across multiple campuses.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Provides accurate, clear and concise benefit information to a diverse university population via phone, email, face-to-face and written correspondence.
  • Resolves benefit concerns which requires extensive research and critical thinking.
  • Serves as a liaison between the University and the State, as well as internal stakeholders, to resolve complex benefit matters.
  • Conducts daily individualized consultations with employees considering retirement or applying for long-term disability.
  • Acts as an ombudsman on behalf of employee with the Division of Pensions and Benefits, insurance carriers and/or investment carriers.
  • Conducts weekly new employee orientations and provides follow up to new employee inquiries; benefit presentations to special employee populations, retirement and long term disability retirement consultations, and quarterly retirement seminars.
  • Supports newly hired, retiring, and disabled employees in successfully navigating key benefit milestones.
  • Assists in creating quarterly financial wellness calendar of events.
  • Participates in auditing activities on a regular basis.
  • Collaborates with the enrollment and administration teams to document processes and maximize efficiencies where possible.
  • Handles planning of annual Open Enrollment vendor fairs.

FLSA Nonexempt
Salary Details $70,000/annually

The final salary offer may be determined by several factors, including, but not limited to, the candidate's qualifications, experience, and expertise, and availability of department or grant funds to support the position. We also take into consideration market benchmarks, if and when appropriate, and internal equity to ensure fair compensation relative to the university's broader compensation structure. Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree and at least five (5) years of experience in benefits administration, preferably in higher education, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Highly motivated self starter.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with New Jersey State Health and Pension benefit programs.

  • This position will require the incumbent to report to both the Newark RBHS and New Brunswick offices on varying days.
