Duties

  • Use knowledge of nursing principles and practices to monitor and evaluate State enforcement of Medicare/Medicaid standards and applicable
    regulations.
  • Advise officials of State and local agencies, professional organizations, and community groups on Federal health care programs and regulations.
  • Work with various components of the States, with professional societies and associations, groups representing health care providers, and beneficiary representatives in formulating and modifying guidelines and procedures.
  • Provide expert health survey advice to State health care associations, as well as consumer and advocacy groups.
  • Make judgments regarding severity and impact of provider deficient practices and write reports of findings.

In order to qualify for the GS-11, you must meet the following: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one year (52 weeks) of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal government, obtained in either the private or public sector), to include: (1) Interpreting health care policies and procedures, and (2) Experience in a healthcare setting.

Substitution of Education for Experience: possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION)

Combination of Experience and Education: possess one full year of professional nursing experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level as described in (A) above and possession of a diploma, associate degree, bachelor's degree, or master's degree from a professional nursing educational program. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours will satisfying the one year of full-time study requirement. To combine education and experience, determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level. Then determine the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Finally, add two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION)

TRANSCRIPTS are required to verify satisfactory completion of the educational requirement related to substitution of education for experience and combination of experience and education. Please see "Required Documents" section below for what documentation is required at the time of application.

Combination of Experience and Education: There is no combination of experience and education to meet the specialized experience requirement at the GS-12 grade level.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Possess a graduate or higher-level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (external link), Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.
