SUMMARY:

The Director Cardiovascular Services reports to the Vice President of Cardiovascular Services. Plans, organizes, and directs overall activities of services in the Cardiovascular and Electrophysiology Labs, Cardiac Noninvasive, Electrocardiology Lab, and other services to be determined. Duties include development and implementation of policies and procedures, operation of programs and services, and direction of personnel.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interprets and implements philosophy, policies/procedures and standards of practice in all areas of responsibility. Participates in the development and support of the goals of the Brown University Health Cardiovascular Institute and Nursing Service Department.

  • Ensuring that clinical practice in all areas of responsibility reflects the philosophy and standards of the Brown University Health Cardiovascular Institute and Nursing Service Department. Sets unit goals with leaders and staff that are in agreement with those of the Department. Maintains visibility and accessibility to management and entire staff.

  • Acts as a resource to develop service lines and assess programs, including determining market position and providing analysis for decision making, assisting in the preparation of business plans, capital and resource planning, evaluating performance and monitoring for quality assurance and improvement.

  • In collaboration with physicians and senior management, analyzes space utilization in department and related proposals for change. For major capital improvements to facilities and /or equipment, consults with hospital facilities operations manager and prepares preliminary drafts of specifications. Reviews proposals and examines same for appropriateness to formulate recommendations on their approval/rejection prior to submission to review by others.

  • Develops and implements plans for the operation of programs and services. Develops, implements, monitors and evaluates systems to provide efficient, effective quality services to inpatients and outpatient populations. Investigates methods of operation that will provide improved customer service in a cost-effective manner.

  • Collaborates with inter-departmental managers in matters of mutual concern. Participates as an active member of various nursing and hospital committees as assigned by the Vice President, Senior Vice President, CNO and Patient Care Services.

  • Collaborates with the CVI to implement policies and procedures consistent with the Intra-societal Accreditation Commission (IAC) for both Cardiac Ultrasound and Non-invasive Vascular Laboratory protocols.

  • Collaborates with the physician groups to identify quality improvement opportunities and works with the groups to establish quality goals.

  • Confers with the Chiefs of Services to identify revenue enhancing programs, develop, implement, and evaluate development consistent with national trends.

  • Monitors and evaluates all activities related to personnel management and patient care, developing and implementing policies and procedures to effect ongoing improvement in the management of assigned departments and programs.

  • Hires, supervises, evaluates, promotes, and counsels staff. Analyzes staffing patterns. Coordinates staffing and nursing personnel information, which may indicate personnel needs. Reviews personnel counseling with subordinate supervisors recommending and/or approving personnel actions, as needed.

  • Prepares the departmental budget by reviewing budget requests and justification for specific areas. Investigates methods of operation, which will provide improved patient care in a cost-effective manner. Operates assigned areas within the designated annual budget.

  • Monitors, evaluates, and maintains a safe environment in all areas of responsibility by establishing guidelines in collaboration with the departments of Infection Control, Engineering, Surgery, and Anesthesia for technical and aseptic practice, electrical safety, occupational safety, and environmental control and hygiene.

  • Maintains quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control in accordance with established hospital department policies, procedures, and objectives.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Master's degree in nursing, Business, Healthcare Administration or related field from an accredited college or university. Licensed Registered Nurse preferred.

If RN - current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode. Understands the provisions of the Nurse Practice Act of the state of Rhode Island - is responsible for maintaining a current knowledge of contemporary professional nursing practice within the legal framework of the Nurse Practice Act.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and sensitivity to cultural diversity in each step of the care process.

EXPERIENCE:

Five to seven years of progressively responsible hospital management experience, preferably in an academic medical center.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Normal office environment. Requires standing, bending, and sitting. Sufficient visual acuity and manual dexterity to use computer keyboard and other common office equipment. Ability to lift boxes of paper, files and/or medical records. Any hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions.

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

Performs independently within department and hospital policies and procedures referring unusual problems to the Vice President of Cardiovascular Services.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Supervisory responsibility of 5 direct reports (managers/supervisors) and an excess of 100 FTEs, directly, or indirectly.

Pay Range:

$155,209.60-$256,068.80
