Job Summary

Conceives and realizes programmatic projects related to important topics in the field of art history and related disciplines, developing new and innovative approaches. Has subject matter expertise in American and African American art history, including their intersection with dance, film, and media. Initiates strategic partnerships and other long- and short- term partnerships with arts institutions locally, nationally, and internationally. Initiates and/or contributes to major research projects of strategic importance to the GRI. Carries on high-level research that will result in outcomes such as book-length publications and scholarly exhibitions. Manages cross-departmental teams.



Major Job Responsibilities

    • Works closely with an institutional research agenda, from single projects to larger agenda-wide issues
    • Conceives and realizes research and programmatic projects (for example: conferences, workshops, publications, exhibitions, research projects) related to important topics in the field of art history and related disciplines, developing new and innovative approaches. Oversees multi-department research teams
    • Identifies underdeveloped areas of research in the fields of art history and related disciplines
    • Represents GRI initiatives and projects at public and private symposia, panels, workshops, and seminars, locally, nationally, and internationally; publishes research results
    • Fosters communication and partnership across other departments and programs of the Trust
    • Maintains a broad network of local, national, and international contacts within the field of art history, and within the position's field(s) of specialization


Qualifications

  • Master's degree or PhD in art history, or related field
  • Subject matter expertise consistent with the African American Art History Initiative
  • 3-5 years experience in academic setting, research institute, or art museum
  • Fluency in at least one foreign language
  • Demonstrated experience designing, executing, and completing high-level scholarly research projects (education may be considered)
  • Demonstrated experience with professional academic writing and editing (education may be considered)
  • Demonstrated ability in research and writing; curatorial and teaching experience a plus
