Job Title Bankruptcy Specialist Job Description Purpose of the Job The Bankruptcy Specialist has advanced knowledge of both federal and state statutes regarding bankruptcy . This role will be responsible for handling all bankruptcy filings from inception to discharge or dismissal, following federal, state and district guidelines as well as noting accounts with updated information. This role requires independent judgment with limited supervision and is required to learn and maintain a knowledge of U.S. Bankruptcy codes and statutes for the credit union. Must have a strong understanding of motions for relief and all bankruptcy chapters; with primary focus on Chapters 7, 11 and 13. The main goal of the Bankruptcy Specialist is to protect Credit Union assets and to achieve goals and objectives that are essential to deadline-driven performance and quality assurance standards. This role will interact with attorneys and other external third parties. Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Responsible for processing bankruptcy accounts/cases in accordance with bankruptcy codes and departmental guidelines; ensuring critical deadlines are not missed.
- Reviews debtor plans, proof of claim, bankruptcy plan, chapters 7 and 13 schedules, motion for relief, reaffirmations and other pertinent motions and or objections with the bankruptcy court.
- Ensures claims are filed timely and appropriate actions are administered in Chapter 7 and 13 cases to ensure compliance with internal procedures, client and bankruptcy rules and regulations.
- Balances multiple portfolios independently and maintains deadlines through prioritization of projects with competing time constraints.
- Work with trustees, debtors'/TFCU attorneys to respond to or coordinate responses to claim objections.
- Updates software with comments/documentation regarding conversations about the account or any tasks that have been initiated.
- Reads and interprets legal documents, motions, dockets as well as trustee and attorney correspondence.
- Responds to calls/correspondence regarding bankrupt accounts from members, attorneys, trustees, internal/external customers and assists the caller with prompt and thorough resolution of their concerns.
- Ensures all timelines and deadlines are met per bankruptcy court requirements and that payments are being received and processed per the plan's payment schedule and timeline expectations.
- Collaborates with and provides expertise to Special Assets Manager on commercial accounts and consumer foreclosures.
- Prepares monthly bankruptcy reports and compiles other bankruptcy statistics as requested.
- Reviews external bankruptcy systems and electronic court documents for resolution/status of ongoing cases.
- Attends court meetings when necessary to represent Truliant Federal Credit Union.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Must have a sound understanding of standard concepts, practices, procedures, regulations and compliance within the bankruptcy and Credit Administration environment
- Knowledge of collection procedures and Bankruptcy Chapters is strongly preferred
- Must have excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written
- Must have intermediate skills in MS Excel and Word
- Must demonstrate multi-tasking skills to handle various tasks and responsibilities
- Must be able to show persistence and accountability
- Must be able to maintain objectivity and emotional stability under pressure
- Must exhibit sound and accurate judgment; includes appropriate people in decision-making process

Physical Requirements
- Occasional standing, walking, bending, and stooping required
- Must be able to sit at a desk for long periods of time and use a computer
- Must be able to moderately lift or move up to 5 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 10 pounds
Education and Background
- Bachelor's degree or at least 2 years equivalent experience required
- Must have minimum of 3 years credit union experience
- 2 plus years of bankruptcy experience preferred; legal or foreclosure experience beneficial
