Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) Human Factors and Reliability Department is seeking forward-thinking, professionals interested in exploring a technical career as a Human Factors Scientist.

This role will provide expertise to the Human Factors program and support safety of INL nuclear operations.

The mission of the Human Factors and Reliability Department at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is to ensure the safety of humans and the usability of systems they operate. We support U.S. Department of Energy missions with a particular emphasis on nuclear energy-supporting modernization of the existing fleet of reactors in the U.S. and paving the way for advanced concepts of operation in new generations of reactors. We also perform research for a broad range of customers dealing with safety-critical applications, from aerospace and aviation, to military, to oil and gas, to electric grid. We are developers of new human factors and reliability methods and tools to support government and industry needs. We provide the ability to create approaches and tools to solve challenging new human factors problems like automation, cybersecurity, or explainable AI. We are pioneers in developing methods for data collection and dynamic modeling in human reliability analysis. We are also practitioners who apply state-of-the-art tools and methods to solve applied problems like control room modernization and advanced visualizations for big data. We design human-system interfaces and evaluate them according to industry best practices. We perform novel human reliability analyses using standard methods. And, sometimes we write those standards where they don't already exist.

Responsibilities Include:



  • Perform and lead human factors research and development of technologies for nuclear power plant control rooms or other safety and security critical industries like electric grid.
  • Demonstrate effective human factors research skills and the ability to work with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers.
  • Demonstrate effective self-starter skills to work independently on projects when required.
  • Effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, with management, co-workers, and customers.
  • Contribute to publications of results of research in a mix of refereed publications, conferences, and technical reports.


Minimum Requirements:



  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Human Factors, Industrial Engineering, Experimental Psychology, or related field
  • M.S. and 1 year relevant experience or Ph.D. in Human Factors, Industrial Engineering, Experimental Psychology, or related field


Preferred Requirements:

Skills related to design, prototyping, and human factors validation are desirable. Familiarity with emerging research topics like cybersecurity and artificial intelligence are beneficial but not required.
