Position Description

DEFINITION:

Cape Fear Community College seeks a full-time instructor for its Advertising & Graphic Design program.

Advertising & Graphic Design instructors must have broad competence in the field of graphic design and be able to provide CFCC students with classroom and/or online instruction via lecture, prepared materials, various forms of media and studio processes, respond to inquiries about coursework and the program and assess students through testing, skill demonstration, portfolio or other forms of academic and professional assessment appropriate to the field.

Teaching needs may be in one or more of the following areas: Typography, Computer Graphics, Design Research, Branding, Print/Publication Design, Package Design, Interactivity, UX/UI, Portfolio Design

Ensure a safe and productive teaching and working environment (classroom, lab, studio) by maintaining equipment and supplies, ensuring overall cleanliness, functionality, and conformance to OSHA standards where applicable. Work with Program Director and other instructors to coordinate instruction and curriculum goals.

Maintain accurate records (such as attendance, grades, documentation for accreditation, etc.) and submit any corresponding reports according to departmental or college guidelines. Expectations for part-time instructors in the program also include as-needed responsibilities related to training and recruiting.

The faculty member may be required to teach courses on any CFCC campus and online. The faculty member will also be expected to facilitate promoting safety throughout the department, in refining/developing curriculum, SLOs (Program and Student Learning Outcomes), assessment tools, and other duties as assigned by the Program Chair.

The faculty member will be expected to fully support departmental initiatives relating to accreditation, grants, etc. All faculty in the Program and Division of Arts & Humanities are expected to fully participate in and support activities outside of the classroom such as student exhibitions, related college events, university campus visits, and also work off-campus within the creative community. These events and initiatives often occur in the evenings and/or on the weekends, and all full-time faculty are required to participate.

The Division of Arts & Humanities is deeply engaged with the Wilmington and surrounding communities, all faculty are expected to support our community partners.

Applicants must be familiar with and supportive of the community college mission and environment and the A.A.S. in Advertising and Graphic Design and subsequent programs.

Full time instructors have an expected teaching load of 18-21 contact hours courses each semester (Fall and Spring). This is a 9-month position.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

  • Receives direct supervision and/or technical direction from the Department Chair.
  • Exercises no supervision

Provide effective instruction to students online and/or in the classroom by preparing for each learning experience, providing supplemental materials to enhance textbooks and lessons (classroom and online), and using effective evaluation methods to measure student performance.

Knowledge of:

Applicants should be versed in Adobe Creative Suite for Mac platform, as well as graphic design principles, processes, and trends both within the field and interrelated areas.

Minimum Education/Training:

Candidates for this position must possess a master's degree with at least 18 hours in a graphic design, digital art, or closely related field. Must be proficient in Adobe Creative Suite on the Mac platform. Applications must be accompanied with a link to professional and/or teaching portfolio (website or .pdf portfolio).

Minimum Experience:

  • MFA Degree in Graphic Design or related field*
    * Must earn the degree prior to August 1st, 2022
  • Evidence of successful industry graphic design work/freelance work
  • Extensive knowledge of current Mac OS and current Adobe Creative Cloud software
  • The ability to thoroughly teach introductory and intermediate levels of graphic design classes.

Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills:

Ideal candidates should be active in the graphic design and related fields, have teaching experience at the collegiate level, and be able to provide examples of both personal/professional work and evidence of successful student work. Experience as a generalist graphic designer or in the printing, publishing, advertising, packaging, or interactivity is preferred.

PORTFOLIO SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS (applications submitted without portfolios will not be accepted)

Submit one (1) pdf document containing the following:

  • No more than 20 samples of successful student work (can include other evidence of successful teaching - student review scores, unsolicited messages, academic awards)
  • No more than 20 samples of professional/personal creative work
  • This position REQUIRES UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS AND/OR TRAINING CERTIFICATIONS be submitted in addition to the application. Please have these documents ready to upload when applying.
  • Candidates are required to submit OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS for all degrees obtained prior to their first day of work or hire date. If the highest level of education is a High School diploma or equivalent, proof of completion is required.
  • Applicants who have obtained their education outside of the US and its territories must have their academic degree(s) validated, at their own expense, by an outside credential evaluation service as equivalent to the Baccalaureate or Master's degree conferred by a regionally accredited college or university in the United States.
