Research Assistant II
Primary Functions
Loyola University Chicago is looking for an experienced, full-time research assistant for an
NIH-funded trial investigating a behavioral intervention for women with metastatic breast cancer. The individual hired for this position will be responsible for carrying out and supporting research activities at the lead site for a behavioral intervention trial, working closely with the principal investigator, program manager, and other study team members at the
LUC.
This position requires substantial capacity to work effectively within a study team in a complex research environment. The successful candidate must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong time management skills, and the ability to use good judgment in daily tasks
Clinical duties
- Maintains current Blood borne Pathogen training, training and certification for shipping with dry ice, Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training updates and any training required by individual studies.
- Follows policies and procedures in accordance with clinic, university, hospital and federal guidelines.
- Maintains Technical Competencies.
- Maintains knowledge of theories and methodologies of medical science research; ability to use research processes, tools and technologies to determine the safety and effectiveness of medical products and services intended for human use.
- Recognizes ethical/compliance requirements within own area of responsibility.
- Assists in study recruitment informed consent and participant scheduling.
- Performs biological sample collection and processing, including phlebotomy, spinning and aliquoting blood, storage and shipping of all specimens according to the protocol.
- Prepares and maintains study charts and records, including laboratory and exam results.
- Collects medical histories, records vital signs, collects relevant biological specimens, performs non-invasive testing, conducts interviews, and records pertinent data on the appropriate research forms.
- Monitors and orders laboratory and study supplies, as needed and across research sites.
- Maintains study samples and assists with the shipment of study samples for analyses within and outside the study site.
- Performs laboratory-based study sample preparation, and analysis, as needed.
- Performs other duties as required.
Data Management
- Participates in audits to assess quality assurance of study data.
- Prepares materials for reports to be written by faculty and staff on the research study.
- Responsible for the transfer of data from other research sites.
- Works with data management to assist with data processing tasks for study; enters data, verifies data, identifies problem data; performs data corrections and queries resolutions when necessary.
- Assists with project accounting activities, including verification of appointments, exams and laboratory analyses performed.
- Participates in clinical research activities according to study protocols.
- Raises concerns if research conflicts with the regularity of framework or if activities deviate from protocols.
- Undertakes the accurate and complete collection of clinical data and selects appropriate forms for recording of data.
- Maintains knowledge of and ability to utilize tools, techniques and processes for gathering and reporting data in a particular department of medicine.
- Participates in projects to gather data for needs analysis.
- Assesses common problems and obstacles surrounding data-gathering.
- Detects and summarizes patterns in data and findings by producing simple reports.
- Performs other duties as required.
Overall study duties
- Provides general assistance, as needed, to the Principal Investigator and other research staff
- Provides general assistance, as needed, to the Principal Investigator to process multisite research activities, and requests
- Mentors new staff under direction as needed.
- Works with other study staff to prioritize activities to meet study goals, including students.
- Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications:
- Requires the academic knowledge of a health science related discipline and the ability to translate, adapt and apply this knowledge generally associated with a Master's degree.
- A minimum of one year work experience in research is required.
- Willingness to be trained in phlebotomy and/or perform other biospecimen data collection from participants.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and established procedures.
- Ability to work on routine job with interpersonal contact skill.
- Ability to interact with internal and external constituents.
Minimum Education:
Required: Bachelors Degree
Preferred: Masters Degree
Minimum Experience:
Required: 5+ years of previous job-related experience. Completion of relevant coursework is considered equivalent experience. |
