Research Technician - Chapman Lab

We are currently seeking a dynamic, interested, and curious Research Technician within the lab of Dr. Edwin Chapman at University of Wisconsin-Madison. The Chapman Lab is interested in the molecular mechanisms underlying neuronal membrane fusion, synaptic transmission, and synaptic plasticity. Chapman and his team are focused on elucidating the mechanisms that mediate calcium-triggered exocytosis in neurons and neuroendocrine cells, as well as a number of related membrane trafficking and synaptic function questions. This role will sit at the unique juncture of Lab Administration and benchwork with a leadership role in lab organization. As such, we are looking for someone who not only has a passion for science, but an understanding of the importance of lab administration, and a deep interest in helping the lab function at its highest level.

Principal Responsibilities:

Research:

  • Assist lab staff with research experiments in biochemistry, and molecular biology

  • Using and understanding a wide variety of molecular biology protocols - such as cloning, DNA/RNA sequencing, assisting with tissue culturing, preparing reagents and protein gels

  • Participate in laboratory meetings and read literature applicable to the research area

Mouse Colony Maintenance:

  • Assist in the maintenance of a complex mouse breeding colony that involves many genetic backgrounds

  • Perform genotyping of genetically modified mice

  • Interact effectively with lab members and veterinary staff to ensure a high standard of care and organization

  • Communicate directly with Investigator, Researchers, Postdocs, and other lab staff regarding the status of mouse colony operations in an efficient and effective manner

  • Keep detailed records

  • Perform weekly rat dissections

Lab Administration:

  • Gathering and placing lab orders, assisting in management of lab stocks and inventory

  • Assist with equipment management and maintenance

  • Serve as liaison for lab safety protocols and assist with communication to HHMI and other host institution departments (including the Safety Office, HR, etc)

  • Assist with onboarding of new staff, and handling orientation to lab protocols

  • Help with management of grant spending and budgets

  • Help with lab organization and other support duties relating to lab operations, as required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or a related field, or equivalent experience

  • Prior experience working in a research laboratory preferred

    • Prior animal handling experience preferred but not required

  • Excellent analytical, communication, problem solving, and organizational skills

  • Good writing skills, needed to write reports, correspond with collaborators etc

  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member

  • Able to learn complex tasks with general instruction, and to use experience to perform a variety of new techniques

  • Actively seeks opportunities to increase skills and expertise

Physical Requirements

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet). Work may involve possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances.
