UnitedHealthcare businesses operate under regulatory licenses, which are governed by state insurance laws and federal and state banking regulations. Entities are required to maintain defined levels of capital to support the businesses. Investment management is responsible for investing approximately $60B in capital within the context of investment policies, guidelines, and regulatory limits. Each entity's assets are allocated to optimize the risk/return profile of the overall portfolio. This is done by investing in a diversified manner across high-quality asset classes such as fixed income securities. As part of UnitedHealth Group's commitment to sustainability, we measure the financed emissions of our fixed income portfolio. In addition, the investment management team is responsible for identifying and analyzing social and environmental investments that support UnitedHealthcare's strategy and commitments. We are seeking to hire an experienced investment analyst that will focus on sustainable investing including leading the process to measure UnitedHealth Group's enterprise-wide financed emissions of its fixed income portfolio, investments that reduce our carbon footprint and investments in projects that improve social determinants. This position will be a key part of UnitedHealth Group's investment management team and support the CSO office.

Investment Management is a key organizational function whose stakeholders include the board of directors, senior management, regulators and credit rating agencies. The process of investing capital must meet regulatory requirements while at the same time balance the desire for income, maximizing the economic value of the portfolio and managing risk. This exciting ESG investment management role will help to define and lead UnitedHealth Groups ESG investing processes and strategy.

The Investment Analyst will lead the process to calculate UnitedHealth Group's financed emissions and develop strategies and targets for improvement consistent with the overall enterprise-wide goals. This work will include becoming an expert in SBTi and the rules and methodologies outlined in the guidance related to calculating temperature and intensity ratings for our fixed income portfolio. In addition, this position will be responsible for setting up processes and internal controls with respect to the internal and external reporting of UnitedHealth Group's financed emissions. This position will also become an expert in PCAF and other regulatory standards related to reporting on ESG matters related to our investment portfolio and will help support the analysis of investments in environmental projects and make recommendations that may reduce our carbon footprint or increase societal returns. Lastly, this person will assist in the research and placement of social impact investments. The successful candidate will be a part of UnitedHealth Groups investment management team and have experience with market and securities research, income, and gain/loss analysis, outside advisor oversight, synthesizing data, and investment policy application. In addition, this person needs to be a strong advocate of the investment management team as it relates to ESG investing.

Primary Responsibilities:



  • Be knowledgeable of all UnitedHealth Groups investment policies and guidelines and their applicability to relevant UHG entities, portfolios, and outside advisors
  • Participate in integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations into investment process by working with key stakeholders within UnitedHealth Group and outside investment managers
  • Serve as a subject matter expert related to SBTi's requirements for calculating Scope 3, Category 15 financed emissions; provide guidance on target setting related to financed emissions and strategies for improving performance of overall portfolio
  • Document processes and establish control procedures for all internal and external reporting related to financed emissions
  • Manage data and third-party research capabilities related to ESG investing
  • Serve as an expert in regulations related to state requirements for ESG investing
  • Support the analysis of investing in projects that will help UnitedHealth Group meet its publicly stated sustainability goals such as investments in tax equity utility projects or VPPAs
  • Provide research for various impact investing funds that are aligned with UnitedHealth Group's strategy and mission
  • Provide security research using internal (e.g. PAM, Bloomberg, FactSet) and external (e.g. third-party research, outside advisors) sources for purposes of determining creditworthiness
  • Process overall market, economic and investment information/data from outside sources and apply it utilizing appropriate statistical techniques to identify and measure the potential risks to UHG's investment portfolios and individual investments
  • Create, participate in, and assist with the preparation of monthly and quarterly investment reports
  • Update existing models and reports using internally approved methodologies and processes Coordinate inputs from many sources while managing tight deadlines and priorities
  • Provide research and decision support related to special projects as needed

Required Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Math, Actuarial Science or significantly related field
  • 3+ years of experience in investment/security analysis or related investment and finance experience
  • Basic to intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Power Point and Word)

  • MBA
  • ESG/Sustainable investing experience
  • ESG emphasis
  • Progress towards the CFA designation
  • Strong analytical (quantitative and qualitative) and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented and time sensitive environment that blends the structure of monthly and quarterly reporting deadlines with the dynamics of a changing financial market and business conditions

Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, or New York City Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is 82,100 to $146,900. The salary range for Connecticut/Nevada/New York City residents is $90,500 to $161,600.
