Director, Career Development Center

The Director provides coordination of the Career Development and all programs housed under the Center. Primary responsibilities include the development of strategic plans, staff supervision of fulltime staff, graduate students and interns, program planning and development, budgetary oversight, employer development, alumni relations, event planning and the provision of career counseling/ advising to undergraduate, graduate, and alumni. Some travel will be required as well as evening and weekend work at times.

Responsibility:

  • Provide individual career counseling and advising to all Alfred University constituents.
  • Work collaboratively with all university divisions to ensure an integrated approach to the delivery of career and leadership related services and programs.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive and focused strategic plan in support of Alfred University's strategic plans.
  • Ensure that the most recent and most effective technology is being utilized, including social media.
  • Plan and execute large-scale events including career fairs, networking events, etc.
  • Oversee department budgets, including endowed and revenue accounts.
  • Develop, provide, and evaluate career-related skills and programming for undergraduate and graduate students and alumni.
  • Market services to students, alumni, potential sponsors, and employers.
  • Ensure professional staffs are sufficiently trained to provide effective career counseling, advising, and programming, as well as other experiences offered through the Center.
  • Recruit, hire and supervise professional and student employees and graduate assistants at the CDC.
  • Partner with other University departments on various programs, committees, special events including the formation of an alumni/student mentoring program.
  • Prepare annual report(s) including the Outcomes report.
  • Complete annual staff evaluations.
  • Represent Alfred University at admissions and alumni functions as requested.
  • Maintain a strong database of alumni who wish to volunteer for career networking purposes.
  • Maintains a safe working environment within and around their facilities and associated equipment and supplies including, but not limited to, obtaining Safety Data Sheet (SDS) information pertaining to any hazards associated with their work environment.

Requirements:

  • Formal Education: Master's Degree required.
  • Experience: Minimum 5 years of professional experience is required in an environment with progressive responsibilities that have provided the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job duties. A minimum of five years of college/university career development experience is preferred.
  • Additional Knowledge/Skills: Supervisory and/or managerial experience required. Certification in MBTI, Strong Interest Inventory, and/or StrengthsQuest preferred. Cultural sensitivity and strong interest in working with a diverse population of students is required. Incumbent must also have:
    • Extensive knowledge of resume and cover letter development, interviewing skills, salary negotiation, networking, graduate school searches, career assessments, career counseling, college student development and theories, and current best practices in career development.
    • Comfortable with using social media platforms in career exploration, alumni networking and program promotion.
    • Budget oversight and management.
    • Ability to plan and execute a strategy for recruiting employers to hire AU students.
    • Demonstrated professional and community involvement in the fields of career development and service.
    • Demonstrated communication ( oral and written) and leadership skills, combined with a record of initiating, planning, organizing and executing student and community focused programs.
    • Experience with hiring, directing and evaluating professional and student staff.
    • Knowledge and practical application of college student development/career development theory.
    • Strong technology interest and ability.
    • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with individuals and departments throughout the University.
    • Ability to work with diverse students, staff, faculty, and other constituencies required.
