The Card Lab at the Mortimer B. Zuckerman Institute at Columbia University seeks a creative, experienced, independent Systems Engineer to support groundbreaking research in the neural circuits underlying visually-guided decision-making in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. More information about Dr. Card and the lab's research can be found by visiting About the Systems Engineer role: A comfort with, and basic understanding of, mechanical and electronic-circuit design, alongside fabrication methods (milling, lathing, etc.) is expected. Strong candidates will also have software experience with coding in MATLAB and databases such as MySQL and will be able to work both independently and closely with biologists to accomplish a complete project cycle, from design through fabrication. Physical Requirements Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. Compensation Range: Research Specialist I - $67,390.00 (minimum) - $84,200.00 (midpoint) - $109,480.00 (maximum) Research Specialist II - $77,740.00 (minimum) - $97,200.00 (midpoint) - $126,385.00 (maximum) Pay Type: Annual HHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
