Job Summary

The Nurse Coordinator is a clinical leader that delivers direct patient care in the Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery (HPB), GI, Skin, and Sarcoma Section (HPB-GISS) program at UCSF Medical Center, specifically in the HDFCCC. This Nurse Coordinator is experienced and highly skilled with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of standards of practice, the major treatment modalities, symptom management, supportive care, and patient education. At this operational level, the Nurse Coordinator proactively utilizes the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation to provide safe, compassionate care; carries out established nursing procedures and performs related duties as required; performs nursing care for patients with more complex needs. The Nurse Coordinator partners with the referring providers, inpatient & outpatient APPs and RNs, Nurse Managers, and others in clinical and admin practice areas. The Nurse Coordinator utilizes an interdisciplinary approach across the continuum of care with adherence to National Patient Safety Goals set forth by regulatory requirements. The Nurse Coordinator is recognized and utilized as a clinical resource and demonstrates investment in the overall forward movement of the unit and the organization.

Specific daily responsibilities include triaging patient calls and lab results, coordinating studies and specialty referrals, notifying Providers of any upcoming orders needed, providing initial and ongoing patient education. Directing the coordination of care for the patient across disciplines, and care continuum as needed. Nurse coordinators will focus on new patient referrals, coordinating their care through multimodality treatments and ensuring they move efficiently and safely through their care journey.

This position will support the HPB-GISS team by communicating with patients on behalf of providers. The nurse will coordinate changes to treatment plans as delegated by the provider. The nurse coordinator will educate patient on any changes and document in the EHR.

Please note: An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Required Qualifications


  • Minimum of five (5) years of recent RN clinical employment experience with a minimum of three (3) years of experience in Medical or Surgical Oncology.
  • Knowledge of treatment and care for patients with primary and metastatic cancers of the liver, gallbladder, bile duct and pancreas, in addition to treatment for tumors of the gastrointestinal tract, skin, and soft tissues (sarcoma).
  • Proven organizational skills with the ability to accept full responsibility for a defined and delegated area and patient caseload.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with physicians and other support staff.
  • Excellent communication skills (written & verbal) and professional conduct.
  • Computer literate (esp. MS Word, Outlook and internet use) and willingness/ability to learn all EHRs as needed.
  • Excellent organizational skills, proficiency in meeting deadlines, ability to work independently and prioritize workload.
  • Demonstrated clinical competence including effective leadership, teaching, and communication skills or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Prior HPB-GISS experience inpatient or outpatient
  • Prior Outpatient nursing experience
  • MS in Nursing with a focus in adult nursing practice or leadership
  • OCN certification
  • BSN

License/Certification


  • Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California
  • Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
