Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Assistant Dean of Admission, Coordinator of Rural Outreach position.

The Assistant Dean of Admission, Coordinator of Rural Outreach will design and implement outreach efforts, on-campus events, and communication strategies to engage rural students and introduce them to Amherst. Key responsibilities include developing on-campus visit programs for counselors and students from rural communities, managing outreach projects, working with tribal nations, and supervising student workers who assist in these projects.

In addition, the Assistant Dean is responsible for recruitment travel, conducting information sessions with a diverse group of students and families, reading admission applications and decision-making, and interacting effectively with the computerized Admission Office database.

The Assistant Dean is a full-time, year-round, two-year term role, job group and level PT-2 (starts at $58,000, commensurate with experience). This position is eligible to participate in the College's hybrid work program and can be done either as a full-time on-campus role or as a hybrid role with some work completed remotely in Massachusetts (or Connecticut) with primary work being done on campus.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Rural Student Strategy Development and Outreach
  • Support the development of a targeted rural recruitment travel strategy
  • In collaboration with Admission & Financial Aid Communications, develop and deploy a rural student communication strategy
  • In collaboration with the Associate Dean, coordinate and participate in rural outreach travel programs
  • Hire and supervise student workers who will assist with small-town and rural outreach efforts, including on-campus and virtual programming, outreach activities, and content creation.
  • Coordinate outreach activities with tribal nations, in conjunction with the Associate Dean for Diversity Outreach
  • Collaborate with the Diversity Outreach Team on the allocation of travel grants for rural and small-town students attending open house programs such as Access to Amherst (A2A) and Be A Mammoth (BAM)
  • Manage the allocation of campus visit travel grants for small-town and rural students
  • Plan and execute on-campus programming for small-town and rural students, including visits to classes, panel sessions, and opportunities to connect with current students
  • Plan and execute a fly-in/travel program for small-town and rural high school and community-based organization counselors to visit campus and learn more about Amherst

  • Interacts and collaborates with other members of the Division of Admission & Financial Aid
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Required
  • Bachelor's Degree, or at least five years of experience in admissions, college access, or related field in lieu of degree
  • A valid driver's license
  • Two to three years of experience in higher education admission or a related field
  • Ability to work effectively with constituencies that have a broad range of experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds
  • Strong presentation skills; can bring to life programming that tells the story of a dynamic residential liberal arts environment to a wide-ranging audience
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to communicate effectively with an array of constituencies, including prospective applicants, college access organizations, parents, high school counselors, alumni, faculty, and staff
  • Proficiency in and ability to quickly learn and apply software (e.g., Google Workspace/Microsoft Office, Slack, Workday, Zoom)
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and think independently while working in a dynamic team environment
  • Excellent time-management and organizational skills, including the flexibility to balance multiple priorities with reliable attention to detail
  • Ability to handle confidential information with respect and discretion
  • Availability to travel approximately 15 - 20 days for recruitment, including community-based organizations, high schools, community colleges, and college fairs for recruitment
  • Availability for occasional evening and weekend responsibilities


Preferred
  • Experience working with rural and small-town student populations
  • Experience with the CRM Slate
  • Experience with creating, implementing, and assessing strategic programs and initiatives
  • Fluency in a language in addition to English
