Responsibilities



  • Lead the design, development and implementation of technical solutions for Robotic projects, involving multiple domains (Mobile Robots, Mobile Manipulators, Industrial Robots).
  • Participate in all phases of product development, including requirements definition, concept generation, detailed design, manufacturing process development, assembly, integration, verification, and validation testing.
  • Create new product architectures for next generation Robotics.
  • Design and develop mechanical parts and assemblies, with careful consideration for mechanical design, kinematics, materials (plastics & metals) and stress analysis.
  • Create product functional and design specifications. Performs DFMEA on parts that are designed
  • Working collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams to define requirements for new and current designs
  • Design mechanical systems for robots, including sheet metal, machined parts, weldments, metal castings, and plastic injection moldings, using 3D CAD software. Create detailed release drawings for manufacturing.
  • Perform static and dynamic analyses and simulations to predict system performance, including natural frequency and lifespan.
  • Take ownership of designs throughout their lifetime, from concept and requirements to validation, production handoff, and troubleshooting.
  • Generate Bills of Materials (BOMs), Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), source control documents, and other release documentation using Agile systems.
  • Generate and maintain engineering documents such as requirements, interfaces, Design of operation, test plans and reports, release notes, and ECOs.
  • Develop test plans for systems, conduct design verification testing, analyze test data, and write comprehensive test reports. Present findings and recommendations
  • Collaborate closely with fabrication suppliers to communicate design intent, gather feedback for improving manufacturability, and identify cost-reduction opportunities.
  • Conduct cost analyses on systems in development, including manufacturing cost estimation, and work on reducing costs of existing products through design, tooling, and fabrication modifications.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to transition products from prototype design to fully released, certified, and documented products.
  • Create new product assembly instructions
  • Support production of final product by troubleshooting process and component problems
  • Provide engineering support to Manufacturing, and Service to facilitate transfer of designs.
  • Assess field reliability data and improve existing product designs as necessary
  • Shepherd projects through the design control process (design specification, design review, risk analysis, etc.), and support New Product Introduction in initial builds (procurement, assembly, troubleshooting)
  • Assist with triage, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and sustaining activities.
  • Experience with regulatory compliance and safety standards in robotics is a plus.



Required Qualifications



  • BS/MS/Ph.D. in mechanical engineering with a minimum of 10 years relevant industry experience
  • Experience with robotics or motion control, and with battery-powered systems. Experience with bearings, gear boxes, motors and drivetrains.
  • High Proficiency using software like 3D CAD to design mechanisms; SolidWorks preferred (3D design & surfacing), Finite Element Analysis (such as SolidWorks Simulation)
  • Comfortable with all phases of the product development lifecycle including design, implementation, debugging, verification, qualification, and transfer
  • Experience with engineering materials, with a history of properly selecting materials that meet design requirements.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills
  • Comfortable operating machine shop equipment
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and capable of articulating specific technical topics or assignments.
  • To conform with U.S. export control regulations, applicant should be eligible for any required authorization from the U.S. Government.


Preferred Qualifications



  • Experience with Solidworks Workgroup PDM data management software
  • Experienced with Agile documentation control tools.
  • Familiar with the Atlassian suite of tools, including Confluence and Jira.
  • Experienced with project management software such as MS Project, Smartsheet, and similar tools.
  • Skilled in fabricating parts in a machine shop environment.
  • Ability to identify opportunities for innovation and offer new ideas to improve products, processes, and procedures.



The annual salary range for this role in California is $150,000 - $175,000 a year, however, base pay offered may vary depending on geographic region, internal equity, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. This position is also eligible for an annual performance-based bonus program. Candidates will be assessed and provided offers against the minimum qualifications of this role and their individual experience.
