Overview

The Columbia Ship Control Engineering (D432) applies several engineering disciplines to develop, deliver, maintain and support advanced fly-by-wire control systems. Engineering opportunities range from initial system design through development, hardware/software integration, test, delivery, and integration of these systems aboard nuclear submarines.

A Cybersecurity Systems Engineer assess/evaluates the customers'/stakeholders' cybersecurity requirements to decompose, derive, and refine with clarity the system's cybersecurity requirements to drive the built-in cybersecurity protections to the architecture and design. The engineer also guides/supports the security layout / architecture and influences the security tools selection and development. The engineer evaluates/assess the proposed and realized implementation to identify security risks and verify the cybersecurity protections from the design are realized and integrated. The engineer guides/supports the development of verification efforts to ensure the cybersecurity protections / capabilities are functional, effective, and complete.

Responsibilities may include:

Perform cyber security analysis, configuration, and testing on shipboard systems.
  • Responsible for determining system design to meet cyber requirements (KISR 3.0 - which is tailored NIST requirements) and configuration of system kernels (VxWorks, Linux) to meet requirements.
  • Network experience and switch/router configuration is a plus.
  • Also perform STIG configurations on kernels and perform / witness cyber testing of system
  • Propose and design systems architecture changes with traceability to requirements
  • Provide Cyber implementation guidance and oversight across technical teams
  • Develop and document technical standard engineering processes and procedures as needed
  • Participate in team reviews of technical requirements, design and implementation plans prior to deployment of computer systems, digital communications systems, networking devices, computer architectures, and computer security penetration tools and techniques
  • Participate in cybersecurity assessment activities and review cybersecurity assessment methods, plans, procedures, and reports
  • Provide input to program milestones and metrics, adhering to cybersecurity-relevant plans and schedules
  • Identify problems and research technical solutions to resolve these problems
  • Apply analytical and evaluative methods and techniques to issues or studies concerning the efficiency and effectiveness of Cyber Security implementation
