This position is challenged to treat human responses to health problems in the specialized population of surgical specialty patients. The incumbent must provide optimal patient care through assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patients and their families. The incumbent must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, motor/sensor, psychosocial, and safety appropriate for patients and meets standards of quality as measured by the unit/department age specific competency standards. This position is responsible to demonstrate proficiency in body mechanics, fire safety, infection control, patient safety and CPR. The incumbent uses both teaching and communication skills, both written and verbal to adequately teach patients and their families. When possible, the family or those significant to the family are considered as part of the assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation efforts of the Registered Nurse (RN). This position coordinates care between other professionals as indicated. This position is challenged to communicate effectively with different types of people; function efficiently under stress; and be able to identify and maintain priorities; respond to simultaneous requests and remain courteous and tactful. The incumbent must be familiar with standard operating procedures in ancillary departments to schedule diagnostic tests and treatment without conflict. Evidence based nursing practice; along with critical thinking skills are required to provide optimally safe patient care when interacting with internal and external contacts and exercising judgment and making decisions. Professional nursing practice is congruent with the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics. This position provides direct patient care.
