Job Summary

The senior software engineer will lead the development, implementation, and maintenance of computing and data infrastructure to support the deployment and monitoring of Machine Learning (ML) and generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools at UCSF Health. They will have principal responsibility for the Health IT Platform for Advanced Computing (HIPAC), a cloud infrastructure that supports the development and deployment of AI/ML tools, including large language models (LLMs) in the EHR. HIPAC currently supports extraction and standardization of data from the EHR, leveraging both SQL databases and APIs, but requires more sophisticated functionality, including non-traditional data, event-driven integration with the EHR, and enhanced real-time monitoring. The senior software engineer will take a lead role in collaborating with data scientists and engineers, solution architects, health informatics experts, and researchers to continually refine and advance this infrastructure, in addition to other complex AI/ML-based software applications. Additionally, the senior software engineer will serve as a technical mentor, guiding and supporting the professional development of other software and machine learning engineers on the team.

Competitive applicants for this position are software engineers with 5+ years of experience in developing and maintaining production-ready and scalable applications, with a focus on cloud-based, AI/ML systems. Proficiency in Python, SQL, common DevOps, and CI/CD is required.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $125,500 - $188,300 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Health AI team is part of the larger UCSF Health IT team and supports the development, implementation, and monitoring of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and other analytical tools, improving patient care, clinician experience, and health system operations. The team's expertise spans data science, machine learning, software/data engineering, business, nursing informatics, and medical informatics.

UCSF Health IT provides clinical and informatics leadership to achieve the strategic priorities of UCSF Health, as enabled by technology. Health IT is a multidisciplinary team of clinicians and technology professionals that partners with clinical, business, and technology leaders throughout the organization, using information technology to improve the quality, safety, and value of care, and the patient and provider experience, for UCSF and its partner organizations.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and / or equivalent experience/training.
  • 5 years of experience in positions of increasing responsibility, designing, implementing, and maintaining complex software applications.
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of full software development lifecycle
  • Advanced experience with Python; ability to write clean, efficient, and production-level Python code
  • Advanced experience with SQL (e.g., SQLServer, PostgreSQL)
  • Advanced experience working with DevOps and CI/CD pipeline toolsets such as Docker, GitHub, etc.
  • Experience implementing and maintaining Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning (ML) lifecycle workflows, including development, deployment, and monitoring AI/ML models into production.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing complex, automated testing
  • Advanced experience with cloud-based architecture in platforms such as AWS, GCP, Azure
  • Proven track record of mentoring junior team members, conducting thorough code reviews, and fostering professional growth within the team.
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated broad problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to interface with management on a regular basis
  • Excellent project leadership and management skills.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related area and / or equivalent experience/training.
  • Cloud development certifications
  • Experience with large language models and other generative AI technologies, especially supporting the deployment of GenAI-based tools in a production environment
  • Experience with data analysis and machine learning tools such as Jupyter, Pandas, scikit-learn, Numpy/Scipy, PyTorch, etc.
  • Familiar with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau)
  • Experience with Epic data structures
