A Brief Overview

The physics assistant works under the supervision of the medical physics staff and certified radiation experts in the Radiation Oncology department at University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center.

What You Will Do



  • Under the supervision of qualified medical physicists (QMP), performs daily quality assurance, including routine quality assurance measurements on linear accelerators, proton radiotherapy system and CT scanners.
  • Performs routine quality assurance of ancillary devices, such as breath-hold ABC device, surface monitoring device, and gating device, etc. Performs quality assurance of patient specific apertures for proton radiotherapy.
  • Participates in the inventory and record-keeping of equipment utilized for physics quality assurance procedures.
  • Fabricates custom radiation-field shaping apertures for electron radiotherapy treatments and associated quality assurance testing.
  • Performs patient-specific dosimetric measurements, dose calculations, dosimetric and geometric comparisons, and performs analysis for radiation oncology treatments. Measurements can utilize a variety of devices such as film, flat panel detectors, ion chambers, diode arrays, and other dosimetric devices.
  • Participates in collection and analysis of the data during the commissioning of new devices.
  • Acquires and analyzes patient data for retrospective or prospective clinical and protocol studies.
  • Under the supervision of physicists, participates in developmental and ad hoc projects in collaboration with the physics and dosimetry team.
  • In collaboration with the physics and dosimetry team, participate in writing reports and procedures.

  • Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.
