Overview

The role of the Project Specialist involves spearheading the development and enhancement of Protective Systems Testing (PST) training. The primary responsibility is to act as a guest instructor and liaison between PST and The Learning Center. The incumbent will be accountable for providing leadership to equip field personnel with the necessary tools and knowledge to comprehend and troubleshoot any of the systems a technician will interface with, such as electromechanical and microprocessor relays, communication systems, remote terminal units (RTUs), AC/DC theory and testing. The ideal candidate must possess expertise in protective relay systems, encompassing their operation and maintenance. Additionally, familiarity with the operation of transmission and distribution equipment, as well as electrical testing of protective relays and supervisory and control systems, is essential. Competence in communication lines and systems testing is also required.Proficiency in various computer applications is a must, such as MS Office, Drawing Database Systems, Doble Protection Suite and Protective relay software. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential for teaching classes as well as updating course material.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Teaching PST courses to union and management and evaluating performance of students.
  • Coordinate with TLC to ensure alignment on training.
  • Collaborate with Substation training team at Hellgate for knowledge sharing and hands-on lab experiences.
  • Evaluate and revise current curriculum to bring it up to date, align with current procedures/instructions, and look for opportunities to finalize new material.
  • Collaborate with PST Training Committee to identify online learning opportunities and ways to enhance training material.
  • Participate and lead annual planning, acting as a liaison between PST, training coordinators and TLC to ensure the correct number of classes are planned to meet department needs.
  • Help facilitate progression testing and administer practical exams.
  • Work with training coordinators and TLC to ensure courses are open for enrollment and students are enrolled appropriately.
  • Update and maintain eTrain and Learning Management System (LMS) records.
  • Provide technical expertise to operating organizations and other parties regarding equipment, materials, safety and operating procedures.
  • Implementing Human Performance Improvement (HPI) tools in training curriculum.
  • Undertaking other related tasks and assignments as required.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • Associate's Degree Electrical Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electromechanical Engineering Technology, Electronics Technology, Energy Technology, Telecommunications Technology or equivalent degree and 8 years of work experience with relay protection systems or equivalent is required or
  • Bachelor's Degree Engineering or equivalent degree and 6 years of work experience with relay protection systems or equivalent is required or
  • Master's Degree Electrical Engineering and 4 years of work experience with relay protection systems or equivalent is required
Preferred Education/Experience
  • Master's Degree Electrical Engineering and 4 years of work experience with relay protection systems or equivalent is required
Relevant Work Experience
  • In-depth knowledge of relay software and its applications. Required
  • 2 years' experience scheduling, planning and coordinating meetings, events, and other team functions. Required
  • Strong computer skills, including the Microsoft office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel) Required
  • Must be well organized, detail oriented, flexible to handle multiple assignments and able to meet deadlines) Required
  • Must possess informal leadership and interpersonal skills and have the ability to build rapport with internal and external stakeholders. Preferred

  • Must be able to respond to Company emergencies by performing a System Emergency Assignment to restore service to our customers.
  • Must be able and willing to travel within Company service territory, as needed.
  • Must be able to participate in the Companys emergency management processes and storm plans as required.
