Quonset Point - General Dynamics Electric Boat

General Dynamics Electric Boat provides an unparalleled learning experience for college students, offering practical exposure in the defense industry alongside expert engineers, shaping the future of submarine innovation.

Engineers at Electric Boat work collaboratively across departments and with our customer to develop innovative solutions for the United States Navy's nuclear submarines. As an Intern, you'll be exposed to various engineering activities with the support of our senior staff. This program grants our trainees the opportunity to develop valuable skills and dive into cutting-edge projects such as leading the Columbia Class design and enhancing Virginia Class submarines. Every intern will be exposed to a wealth of knowledge in order to excel in the engineering domain.

This program requires a minimum commitment of 8 weeks during the Summer 2025 Season.

Participation in this program requires medical screening, passing a drug test, and potential DOD Investigation

This is not a remote opportunity.

Quonset Point Intern Opportunities Include:

Systems Engineer - Quality Assurance - Summer Internship

Quality Assurance Engineers are engaged in all aspects of problem resolution for Quality issues that arise at the Quonset Point Facility. As Electric Boat continues to expand execution of new programs (Columbia and VPM), members of this team are key contributors to ensure success of these programs. QA Engineers routinely work cross functionally with internal and external customers to ensure a quality product. This position will report to the Quality Assurance Engineering Supervisor at QP.

Responsibilities of the QA Engineer intern include leading investigations of quality deficiencies at the Quonset Point facility, and to assist in issues that impact both Quonset and Groton shipyards. Efforts will include development of recovery plans, coordinating the status and efforts of multiple departments, assuring adequate corrective action is taken and interacting with government agencies such as SUPSHIP and NAVSEA, as well as Electric Boat Senior Management through final resolution. Emergent issues may originate from any discipline, trade or supplier and will required candidates to become familiar with new subjects and topics in an expedited manner.

Quality Assurance Summer Interns may be responsible for:

    Pressure Hull Frame Dimension and Hull Fairness Measurement Evaluations
  • Lead and participate on significant issue problem resolution teams including causal analysis and implementation of preventive actions where required
  • Monitor, assign, status, and provide resolution support for all Quonset Point Corrective Action Requests
  • QIM (Quality Item Matrix) administration and act as a liaison to teaming partner Newport News Shipyard (NNS) for resolution of construction issues between shipyards, including causal analysis and preventive actions where required
  • Develop and monitor quality metrics to improve 1st time quality at the Quonset Point Facility
  • Participate in Special Emphasis Program (SUBSAFE/DSS-SOC/FBW SCS) working groups within EB and jointly with NNS
  • Support all quality audits at Quonset (e.g., certification audits, NDT audits, NAVSEA 08 audits, etc.)
  • Directly supporting ship certification & QP module ship outs
  • Support quality improvement initiatives lead by department quality assurance engineers

Industrial Engineer - Construction Readiness - Summer Internship

The Construction Readiness Directorate enables the trades to work to their fullest potential by developing trust through dedication, collaboration and customer satisfaction.

Industrial Engineer Interns may be responsible for:

  • On the shop floor Trades Support
  • Project management
  • Improving Manufacturing
  • Process Flow/Mapping
  • Work Order Preparation/Review

Pursuing a Bachelor or Masters of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering, Process Engineering, Systems Engineering

Submarine Materials Engineering & Laboratory Services - Summer Internship

The Submarine Materials Engineering & Laboratory Services Directorate comprises of many cross-functional groups, each with different core roles and responsibilities. These include: Design and Engineering Support, Welding Laboratory, Advanced Concepts, Groton Construction Support, Quonset Point (QP) Structural and Piping Construction Support, Welding Engineering Supplier Development and Oversight, Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Engineering Supplier Oversight and Support, Strategic Sourcing, Metallic Materials Engineering, Base Materials Technology, Non-Metallic Materials Engineering, and Robotics Engineering.

The Submarine Materials Engineering & Laboratory Services Summer Interns may be responsible for:

  • Construction support of both pipe and structural welding
  • Welding procedure qualification efforts
  • Database development
  • Literature reviews to support new technology development
  • Shadowing of engineers to learn all of the different aspects of the welding engineering organization

Pursuing a Bachelor or Masters of Science Degree in Material Science Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Welding Engineering

Qualifications

To be qualified for this position:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • US citizenship is required.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a medically supervised drug screen and background check.
  • Must be enrolled full-time at a college or university
  • At minimum students must have completed their Freshman year prior to the start of the internship.
  • Must be available to work 40 hours per week for a minimum eight (8) consecutive weeks between May 2025 to September 2025.
  • Selected candidates will be responsible for establishing housing and reliable transportation for the duration of their intern assignment.
