Overview

The Engineer under the general guidance of supervision directs or performs specific engineering assignments of major size or complexity. For those assignments makes independent decisions on engineering problems and methods. The Engineer establishes specifications for contracts, reviews bids and may make or approve field design changes. On station assignment the engineer may represent Central Engineering in the resolution of engineering problems and in coordinating work to be done.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Conceives, plans, designs solutions or alternatives of new or refurbishment projects including technical and economic evaluations, specification preparation, feasibility studies.
  • Serves as a sponsor Engineer, meets with other departments in the design, estimating, erection, testing maintaining and supplying consultation for the installation of mechanical, and control and instrumentation equipment.
  • Prepares specifications and develops system design for the installation and repair of equipment, related to fire protection systems.
  • Prepares engineering sketches required to modify systems. Initiates requests for funding or projects having a small cost range. Assists in installation and construction.
  • Provides design improvement recommendations in connection with fire protection systems.
  • Has the lead discipline responsibility for projects.
  • Performs independent evaluation of system equipment replacement and new project justification using engineering economics.
  • Assists users with ESR initiation, review and following.
  • Perform other related tasks and assignments as required.
  • Responsible for reviewing, approving, signing, and stamping drawings and submitting them to the relevant departments for permitting.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and 3 years' of work experience in areas of design, and application of engineering principles specifically in the Fire Protection area of expertise.
Preferred Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree Engineering and 3 years' of work experience in areas of design, and application of engineering principles specifically in the Fire Protection area of expertise.
Relevant Work Experience
  • Requires at least 3 years work experience in areas of design, and application of engineering principals in area of expertise and preferably Fire Protection. Experience should be such as is acceptable to NY State University for P.E. Examination.
  • Supervisory experience of professional and union employees preferred.
  • Requires computer proficiency.
  • Requires strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Requires strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with personnel on all levels.

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint, etc.
Licenses And Certfications
  • Driver's License Required
  • Professional Engineer (PE) PE License in Fire Protection Required
Physical Demands
  • Ability to respond to system emergencies
  • Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs
  • Stand, walk, and climb ladders and stairs for the duration of the workday
  • Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
Additional Physical Demands
  • Must be able to respond to Company emergencies by performing a System Emergency Assignment to restore service to our customers.
