Job Description:

Responsibilities

The Program Research Specialist III will join the BSDS's Electronic Syndromic Surveillance System (ESSS) team, coordinate the syndromic surveillance efforts, and utilize syndromic data for opioid and drug overdose related surveillance. The Program Research Specialist III will serve as a strategy lead of the OD2A-S project funded by the CDC, work closely with the Office of Drug User Health, other state offices, and Local Health Departments (LHDs) on drug overdose surveillance, and compliant with OD2A-S grant deliverables. The Program Research Specialist III will validate and refine syndrome definitions, create and modify SAS filters, generate surveillance reports, and monitor alerts to detect drug overdose spikes and outbreaks. The Program Research Specialist will help maintain the ESSS report module, research and enhance outbreak detection methods, create syndromic surveillance reports, update user guides and documents, and train users to utilize ESSS for disease surveillance. The Program Research Specialist III will prepare and submit peer-reviewed presentations, abstracts, and publications for best practices of syndromic surveillance. Other appropriate related job duties will be assigned as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Public Health, Economics, Computer Science or a related field and three years of research experience in the collection and analysis of data; OR an Associate's degree in a related field and five years of such experience; OR seven years of such experience. A Master's degree in a related field may substitute for one year of such experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience determining the kinds of information needed, appropriate data sources and collection methods, statistical analysis methodologies, and developing written recommendations. Database management and analytical skills plus use of programming tools, SAS and SQL; knowledge of disease coding schemes as ICD-10 codes, LOINC/SONMED and medical file transfer HL7; data analysis from a relational database and evaluation in the use of syndromes for surveillance.

Conditions of Employment

Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.

Valid and unrestricted authorization to work in the U.S. is required. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Travel, up to 10% of the time, will be required.

This position requires that the incumbent will report to the official work location and live within commuting distance to the official work location. Telecommuting will be available.
