Position Description

Come join our team of highly capable and dedicated engineers in the Engineering Services Group within the Capital Projects and Roadway Structures Division of the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT)!

Reporting to the Bridge Design and Engineering Manager, the Associate Bridge & Roadway Structures Engineer (Civil Engineer, Associate) will serve the role of design engineer in the design delivery of complex roadway structures, retaining wall, and bridge painting projects. As a Project Engineer and structural design lead, staff in this position will employ a working knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of structural engineering for public works projects.

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform, under limited supervision, senior-level engineering design, cost estimating, specification writing, drafting, mapping, and computations, as well as read and interpret plans, specifications, and construction documents
  • Serving as a Project Engineer, coordinate the technical design efforts of multi-discipline internal and consultant-lead design teams to complete construction documents for Capital Improvement Projects
  • Work with inter- and intradepartmental, administrative, engineering, and construction personnel, elected officials and their staff, other government agencies, contractors, and the public to exchange information, coordinate work, answer questions, and respond to complaints
  • Provide design support during the construction phase of projects, including review and preparation of submittals, review of Requests for Information and change orders, attending weekly construction meetings, and preparing design clarification sketches and responses to requests for information
  • Serve as a Department technical expert for areas of bridge or structural engineering
  • Support the following projects and programs related to the Move Seattle Levy:  Bridge Seismic Retrofit Program (BSRP), Bridge Replacement Program (BRRP), and the Bridge Painting Program
  • Provide in-house design support for retaining wall design, signal pole foundation design, reimbursable structural design work for other City Departments, and the Areaway Hazard Mitigation Program
  • Provide support with the Bridge Load Rating Program and provide assessments and analysis of existing structures in accordance with AASHTO and FHWA requirements
  • Provide support to supervisors and project managers for preparation of permit applications and accompanying plans/specifications packages
  • Research existing conditions and perform technical field investigations and inspections as required to support a project through design and construction
  • Support department goals in promoting diversity, racial equity, and social justice

Qualifications

Required Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology
  • Three years of professional civil engineering experience
  • Ability to effectively work in a multi-cultural workplace with a diverse customer base

Other combinations of education, training, and/or experience that provide an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class may be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability.
 
Required Certifications/Licenses :
Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
 
Desired Qualifications :

  • Registration as an Engineer-in-Training, or Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Washington
  • Three to seven years of bridge and roadway structure engineering experience
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully multi-task
  • Demonstrated capability to actively manage the design of multiple projects and monitor and maintain the progress of schedules to meet milestones
  • Knowledge and experience with AutoCAD and Civil3D
  • Familiarity with City of Seattle, WSDOT BDM, and AASHTO Bridge and Roadway Structure design standards
  • Experience with WSDOT Bridge Software, CSiBridge, LPILE, and SPCOL
  • Multilingual

Work Environment/Physical Demands :
Most work will be performed in a normal office environment. May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Field assignments may entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances, and work in or near construction sites. May be required to lift over 50lbs and stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time. Overnight travel may be required.
