Job Description Summary

The College of Arts and Sciences invites applications for the position of Chair of the Music Department at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, tenure-eligible, with an 11-month appointment anticipated to begin July or August 2018. The department seeks candidates committed to undergraduate teaching excellence at a comprehensive institution that supports both liberal arts curricula and professional programs. Applicants who will contribute to the college's commitment to a diverse and inclusive environment are encouraged to apply.

The Music Department offers academic, professional, and performance degrees including the B.A., B.S. (Music Business), B.M. (Composition, Music Education, Music Therapy, Performance), M.M. (Performance and Pedagogy), and M.S. (Music Education). The department also interfaces with the Creative Arts Therapy Department in the MS (Creative Arts Therapy specialization in Music Therapy) degree. The Department consists of 18 full-time and 51 part-time faculty, two full-time staff, more than 200 students (undergraduate and graduate music majors), and a Community Music School of 250 students. Students enrolled at Nazareth have the opportunity to participate in study abroad programs, original research, internships and civic engagement, as well as an Honors Program. In May 2017, construction began on the Jane and Laurence Glazer Music Performance Center, a new multimillion dollar facility that will complete the College's Visual and Performing Arts Complex. It is expected to open in April 2018. Nazareth College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and the National Association of Schools of Music. The Music Therapy program is approved by the American Music Therapy Association.

The ideal candidate will have an earned doctorate in music and will have demonstrated significant achievement and distinction in teaching, scholarship, and service, sufficient to warrant appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. In addition, documented successful administrative experience in the areas of strategic planning, curriculum development and assessment, accreditation, faculty governance, and budget management is required. We invite candidates who have experience in inter-professional collaboration, interactions with diverse communities and cultures, and mentoring faculty. Preference will be given to candidates with successful grant writing and/or fundraising experience.

We seek an ambitious, inspiring, and innovative leader to guide the continued growth and development of the Department. The new Chair will have the opportunity to provide overall leadership and vision for the Department, engage with faculty and staff in efforts pertaining to strategic planning, enrollment management, student success, and promote a healthy and collegial environment for the Department as a whole.

The new Chair will encourage, support, and expand the educational, creative, and performance activities of students and faculty, assess faculty and staff performance, advocate for the department within the College and beyond, and manage the everyday functioning of a multifaceted department. The candidate will also be expected to lead accreditation efforts. Some teaching in an area of expertise will be expected. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
