Bedford/St. Martin's is seeking an Associate Editor for our English group. The editor will plan, develop, and manage preparation of undergraduate English composition textbooks, Web content, and ancillary elements that promise competitive advantage.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Work with authors and other content providers, plan, evaluate, and edit for quality and competitive advantage textbooks and print and electronic supplements. The editor is responsible for making editorial decisions and directing authors and others to make improvements accordingly.
  • Schedule, plan, and coordinate the elements of each project including scheduling content delivery, editing, reviewing, permissions, text and photo research, and turnover to production while adhering to deadlines and budgets.
  • Hire and manage content providers, text and photo researchers, and freelance editors as needed.
  • Prepare production-ready final manuscript; text and art files; and associated readings, art, photo, and permissions logs; and prepare final credit lines.
  • Keep abreast of pedagogical and market trends; perform competitive analyses.
  • Write promotional copy.
  • Travel occasionally to discipline conferences and/or college campuses to meet with authors and customers, provide book exhibit coverage, train or support sales representatives, gather market feedback, or promote titles.
  • Participate in training and professional development activities.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent editorial judgment and skill
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with ability to form productive working relationships with authors, author teams, and in house teams including marketing and new media
  • Strong project management skills, with ability to juggle multiple ongoing projects and work effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and work independently
  • Close attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a variety of online environments to manage data and optimize user experience
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel, Google, Dropbox, Adobe Acrobat
  • Interest in and ability to think creatively about higher education, English composition

    Experience Needed:

  • Teaching or tutoring experience in the discipline a plus
  • Previous experience in educational publishing strongly preferred

    Educational Background Required:

  • Bachelor of Arts degree
  • English, Writing Studies, Rhetoric, Technical Communication or related major preferred
