Title: Writer

Hours: 10-40 per week (Depending work load)

Target cities: (remote work): Oklahoma City, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Charleston area

Location: This is a remote, work-from-home position, but location near Charleston, South Carolina, is preferred for some in-person contact and to gain awareness of our local programs.


The Learning Lab team at Google is looking for 5 writers to aid in content creation and curation for our Applied Digital Skills ( program in Charleston, South Carolina. This person will assist in writing educational content for Google Applications (word processing docs, spreadsheets, slides, etc.) as well as for Google Apps Script (a scripting language based on Javascript). Content includes lesson plans, video scripts, and online instructions for college and continuing education students.

Superb writing and editing skills are necessary for this position, along with the ability to multi-task, locate relevant information online and work within deadlines. The position will involve writing, editing, manipulating and paraphrasing existing content.

Writers will have the opportunity to observe an existing Applied Digital Skills course in their local city (Oklahoma City, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Charleston) so that they can better understand the target audience they are writing for.

Top Responsibilities

  • Create, edit, review, and modify educational materials, like: video scripts, lesson plans, support materials (closed captions, website pages, etc.), and videos (only provide feedback not create)

Required Qualifications:

  • 3+ years previous experience in technical writing/content creation with a portfolio of work
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with Google Apps (like Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides)
  • Experience working a curriculum development team.
  • Familiarity with technology education.
  • Interest or passion in diversity, and/or educational access and equity.

Nice to Haves:

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, English, Marketing, Journalism or similar field is preferred but not required
  • Teaching experience (high school-college preferred)
  • No previous Javascript experience is required, however a willingness to learn introductory programming is required.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented
  • Comfort and tolerance for ambiguity-- willing to work on problems that arent neatly defined
  • Self directed, able to perform tasks without a great deal of supervision
  • Ability to work within strict deadlines
  • Break large problems into actionable pieces for novices to understand
  • Create or adapt existing processes to complete a task
  • Communicate to or with different audiences
