Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Program Assistant (Community Outreach Specialist) within the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.
The Program Assistant implements and presents health education programs relevant to pediatrics, adolescents, and young adults affected by cancer and benign blood disorders. The Program Assistant is responsible for curriculum development and/or the implementation of health education for the Rutgers Cancer Institute and related efforts in the New Jersey Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Center of Research Excellence (
NJPHORCE). This position is responsible for planning, scheduling, outreach, training, program delivery and evaluations, communications, and event participation.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Works with team members, including Associate Director of PHORCE, and community stakeholders to plan, organize, implement, and evaluate community engagement and outreach activities.
- Performs community level engagement and outreach needs assessment.
- Participates in community advisory council and workgroup meetings and focus groups.
- Researches, identifies and utilizes evidence-based educational programs.
- Performs necessary community outreach and engagement program operations and communications. Expected outcomes include timely, accurate, and professional completion of the following tasks:
- Participates in phone, electronic, and in-person communications and meetings with outreach-relevant partner contacts, subject matter experts, and professionals to support the development and improvement of programs.
- Serves as a liaison with potential partners, partners, and others with community outreach and engagement related inquiries.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- Bachelor's Degree in Public Health, Nursing or a related discipline, plus three (3) years of related experience in a business office, government agency or university setting required.
- Equivalent experience, education and/or training may be substituted for the education requirements.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Master's Degree with community outreach research experience and public health research experience conducting community-based research, and certification as an education specialist (CHES) is preferred.
- Knowledge and understanding of public health, healthcare, and health education principles and practices preferred.
- Strong interest in health disparities preferred.
- Fluent in Spanish desired.

Physical Demands and Work Environment |
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Lifting up to 40 lbs. (to move project supplies, set-up and break-down event equipment, etc.) WORK ENVIRONMENT: Office environment. Moderate noise.

Special Conditions |
- Significant instate travel to partner locations and program events may be required.
- Must have access to a reliable car, or other means of transportation, for travel around the state to meetings and events with partners (mileage and tolls are reimbursed at standard University / Federal rates).
- Flexibility to work nights and weekends as needed.
