Infection Preventionist

Scope of Position: The Department of Clinical Epidemiology is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for our patients, visitors, faculty and staff through preventing and controlling the spread of infection at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC). The Infection Preventionist (IP) conducts and reports surveillance on healthcare acquired infections (HAIs) and other organisms of epidemiologic importance to identify trends and apply applicable interventions in collaboration with key stakeholders. The IP monitors process data on hand hygiene, isolation compliance, and HAI prevention bundle elements to provide feedback to staff and hospital leadership to drive successful outcomes and ensure compliance with applicable regulatory standards. The IP develops policies and procedures using evidence based practice guidelines. The IP provides education on infection prevention policies and procedures and monitors for compliance. The IP serves as a consultant and content expert on infection prevention. The IP interacts and collaborates with key external partners including local and state health departments. The IP evaluates the healthcare environment (air, water, cleanliness, etc.), the quality of patient care and patient outcomes for risk of infection and makes recommendations for preventing their occurrence.

Minimum Qualifications

For Hire

  • Bachelors degree in nursing, public health, epidemiology, clinical laboratory science, medical technology or related field required.
  • At least two years of healthcare or public health experience or related field required.
  • Obtain Certification in Infection Control (CIC) within three years of hire date.
  • Knowledge of principles of epidemiology, infection prevention, infectious diseases and microbiology required.
