The opportunity

Southern New Hampshire University's Wolak Learning Center (WLC) is seeking an Academic Success Coaching Graduate Assistant on the Manchester campus to provide on-campus, in person support for University College students. In collaboration with the Assistant Director and the part-time Academic Coach, the Graduate Assistant will provide academic coaching to help students reach their academic potential.

This position is open to full-time graduate students and is an opportunity for students interested in the field of teaching, higher education, or college student development to learn practical skills in those areas. The Graduate Assistant position can be customized to a student's interest and background. The Graduate Assistant will have the chance to understand higher education and grow as a student and professional.

The ideal candidates will have exceptional organizational, interpersonal and leadership skills; oral and written communication skills; adaptability and flexibility; and student leadership experience. Candidates must be able to work independently, collaborate with the WLC team regularly, and be willing to jump in and take on additional projects as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Engage in relationship-based student coaching to support the growth of transferable learning, organizational, and executive function skills through one-to-one meetings.

  • Positively impact retention and success of campus students by providing exceptional student support and foster engaging learning experiences.

  • Develop a strong understanding of university supports and resources and refer students to appropriate resources as needed.

  • Maintain confidentiality of all student records and information shared during coaching sessions.

  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to coordinate and support efforts and advocate for student needs.

  • Assist in the development and implementation of coaching programs designed for students on academic probation.

  • Supervise peer educators during evening hours, as necessary.

  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Represent Wolak Learning Center at on-campus recruitment events

  • Build relationships with students, as well as SNHU staff and faculty, to enhance student success

  • Participate in weekly staff meetings focused on student retention

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Full-time enrollment in a graduate degree program at SNHU

  • Bachelor's degree in preferred relevant field

  • Preferably in Education, Sociology or Psychology

  • Must have a 3.00 or above undergraduate cumulative GPA

  • Submit Cover Letter and Resume for consideration

  • Strong knowledge of MS Office that supports office processes

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least one year of mentoring, coaching and/or tutoring experience in higher education

  • Classroom experience as a teacher, student teacher and/or teaching assistant

  • Familiarity with SNHU policies and procedures, and experience with Brightspace or similar online learning platform

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Microsoft Word and Excel

Learning Outcomes:

  • As a result of working in the Wolak Learning Center, the Academic Coaching graduate assistant will develop skills to assist students in specific content areas using multiple in-person modalities and develop specific differentiated coaching strategies to meet various needs of learners based on learner preferences, strengths/weaknesses, background, or prior knowledge.

  • As a result of working in the Wolak Learning Center, the Academic Coaching graduate assistant will develop leadership skills through coaching students, collaborating with WLC staff, and assisting the Assistant Director and Part-Time Academic Coach with other individualized projects to further the mission of the Wolak Learning Center.

  • As a result of working in the Wolak Learning Center, the Academic Coaching graduate assistant will be able to explain, demonstrate, and incorporate study habits, motivation, and academic success strategies consistent with those emphasized during coaching training.

  • As a result of working in the Wolak Learning Center, the Academic Coaching graduate assistant will incorporate effective communication skills into coaching sessions and improve his/her own professional development skills for post-SNHU employment opportunities.

Compensation

The hourly pay range for this position is $12.00 - $15.00. Actual offer will be based on skills, qualifications, experience and internal equity, in addition to relevant business considerations.
