Job Description

The shift lead safety officer is primarily responsible for coordinating the activities of specific shifts. In addition to the regular PT officer responsibilities, shift leads assume additional duties, including but not limited to: training new employees; calling late/absent employees and reassigning staff for coverage, as needed; perform other administrative duties, as assigned. The officer is responsible for rounds, closing procedures, locking and unlocking doors, assisting patrons and staff, setting/disarming alarm systems, handling and/or reporting maintenance and custodial problems and, in general, dealing with any emergency or routine situations as needed.

Shift Lead Duties might include:

  • Act as the most senior officer when Senior officers are unavailable, which may include serve as the point of contact for First Responders (such police, fire, and medical), Energy Management, or Campus Facilities. Be prepared to lead the shift during emergencies.
  • Train new employees and review procedures with existing officers during assigned shifts. Have a full understanding of the Safety Team Mission and continuously review training and procedures.
  • Assist with progress reports for current officers during assigned shifts.
  • Actively check communication channels (Teams, emails, etc.) while on duty and encourage other officers to do the same.
  • Check Trespass Reports and Incident Logs for updates.
  • Collect and compile patron counter and tally sheet information.
  • Provide functional supervision of part-time officers, including check attendance, reassign coverage, as needed. Notify administration, as necessary.
  • Enforce university and library policies and procedures. Escalate to senior officers, when appropriate.
  • Assist with SubItUp scheduling issues.
  • Run the PA System to make emergency closure announcements.
  • Perform Lost & Found duties.
  • Perform opening and/or closing rounds.
  • Complete incident reports.
  • Report disciplinary issues for follow-up by a senior officer.

Other duties may include:

  • Complete rounds through the building.
  • Provide coverage for security desks, as needed.
  • Ensure the security of assigned work area.
  • Assist patrons.
  • Investigate and report security incidents (e.g., policy violations, thefts, emergencies, etc.). Initiate communication with supervisor regarding security issues, project difficulties, etc.
  • Investigate, correct and report maintenance problems through the appropriate channels.
  • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.
Shift

The Evening Shift Lead working hours: typically Sun-Thu 4:30pm-12:30am

Shift hours will be vary based on posted library hours. There is some room for flexibility, but the essential hours are posted above. Some hours outside of these shifts will be necessary for changes in the public hours, coverage, and/or training purposes.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

Prior security experience.

Candidates will also be evaluated on the following:

  • Ability to pass standard First Aid and CPR courses.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills, verbal and written
  • Ability to follow established guidelines and respond to unique situations.
  • Ability to complete scheduled walking rounds through the building.
  • Ability to perform detailed work.
Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $14.50 to $17.00 per hour

Grade: GGS-004
