About the opportunity

SWCA is currently seeking applications for a Natural Resources Team Lead - Avian Resources, supporting our natural resources projects throughout Nevada. The Natural Resources Team Lead - Avian Resources is responsible for providing leadership by managing staff, projects, and clients. The successful candidate will possess a proven track record of developing new business, managing complex projects, supporting our team in meeting financial goals, and mentoring others to do the same.

The Natural Resources Team Lead reports to the Natural Resources Director for Nevada out of SWCA's Las Vegas, or Reno, Nevada offices. The successful candidate will have a depth of experience and familiarity with the business environment of Nevada. This is a full-time, regular (with benefits), exempt position based out of either Las Vegas or Reno, Nevada. Remote employees based nearby will be considered. If remote, travel to a local office quarterly would be expected.

What you will accomplish

The Natural Resources Team Lead - Avian Resources candidate will manage current projects and ongoing project tasks while supporting direct reports and developing skills in junior staff. This position will oversee and implement surveys for federally listed species, general avian resources, and raptors and eagles. This position will require a thorough understanding of the regulatory environment for these resources and the ability to plan and execute work to achieve our clients needs. This position will report to a program director and work collaboratively with other natural resources team leads in Nevada and other offices as needed. The successful candidate will manage and grow our team of avian biologists through hiring, developing talent, or cross-training existing staff. The position will contribute to the following:

Organizational leadership

  • Provide highly effective, dynamic management and leadership to SWCA's natural resources team and staff. Help align employees to their annual career development goals and build teams to support program and individual employee development.
  • Supervise and mentor technical staff while promoting a culture of teamwork, engagement, quality service, and customer satisfaction.
  • Work closely with the Natural Resources Director - Nevada to hire avian resource staff.
  • Proactively monitor the productivity and development of your team, set clear expectations, and foster an environment of teamwork.
  • Provide general support to the team relating to subject matter resources, training opportunities, regulatory and research updates.
  • Drive compliance of safety policies and reporting requirements to ensure overall team safety.

Technical leadership

  • Provide quality assurance/quality control reviews of deliverables prepared by other team members.
  • Ensure the delivery of high-quality technical work in support of the natural resources program, including proposals, NEPA analysis, and reporting.

Client leadership

  • Develop strong relationships with existing clients while executing strategic analysis, marketing and sales for new clients.
  • Manage the performance of individual projects, and effectively coordinate with clients and agencies, to produce technically excellent work that is on time and on budget.
  • Engage with the office business development team to evaluate changing market conditions and strategic sales opportunities at a regional and sub-regional level (new clients and geographies).
  • Lead proposal efforts and internal business development groups, drive accountability for participation in business development and help mentor sell-doer mentality in all employees.
  • Take lead role in the go/no go decisions in concert with the Director and drive accountability for efficient proposal and marketing pursuits.
  • Develop strong and productive relationships within industry organizations and with agency staff to expand the regional client base in line with the region's strategic goals.

Experience and qualifications for success

Required

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's (B.A. or B.S.) degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, or related field.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of project and/or technical experience, including developing and implementing budgets, schedules, and scopes of work from pre-field tasks to final report preparation, and field surveys.
  • Previous experience with federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations in the Nevada area
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to pass a motor vehicle screening

Preferred

  • Demonstrated experience in supervising, mentoring, and providing leadership for other professionals.
  • Demonstrated business development success and consulting acumen, including established credibility with federal and state agencies and clients, as well as success in proposal writing.

An employee in this Nevada-based position can expect a salary of $78,000.00/year to $101,920.00/year. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
