GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

We are seeking an enthusiastic and team-oriented laboratory technician who is passionate about biomedical research to work in our Flow and Mass Cytometry Research Core. Flow Cytometry is an essential tool for all cellular biologists and cell-sorting permits the physical separation of desired subpopulations based upon their immunophenotype. The selected candidate will be responsible for organizing experiments directly with our scientific colleagues, carrying out complex flow cytometric analyses and cell-sorting, and delivering results that are suitable for accurate interpretation, observing high health and safety standards.

The successful candidate will report directly to the Senior Manager of the Flow Cytometry Laboratory, Dr. R. Mylvaganam and the Director of Flow Cytometry, Dr. F. Preffer. The position is located within the Massachusetts General Hospital Pathology department's Charlestown Navy Yard Research Facility which is utilized by the entire Massachusetts General Hospital and surrounding research community. The position entails responsibilities related to research projects in a variety of areas including, but not limited to stem cell biology, cancer research, transplantation and immunology. After training, operation of the laboratory's flow analyzers, cell sorters and Cytometry time of flight (CyTOF) instrument will be expected. Working hour flexibility will be required.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for modifications of existing assay techniques, experimental protocols and new procedures.

Responsible for specific research study

Flow cytometry analysis and cell sorting

Mass cytometry (CyTOF) analysis

Coordinating research efforts

Ordering and tracking needed laboratory reagents

Presenting results, techniques, and pertinent information.

Consulting on development of assays, protocols, purchasing, LIMS, and other lab related systems.

Participation in the design of experiments or field work

Organizes and summarizes data and responsible for interpretation of results using statistical or graphic summaries

Prepares written status reports

Organizes material for manuscript preparation for publication and/or presentation at scientific meetings

Training of new lab personnel including but not limited to research technicians and fellows

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:



    Bachelor's degree in biological or physical sciences required

    Some lab related experience preferred

    Must be able to demonstrate effectiveness working in complex and dynamic working environment.

    Must be a motivated self-starter with extreme attention to detail and data accuracy

    Utilize and demonstrate proficiency for computer applications (Microsoft Word, Excel), Keyboard and mouse and enough physical dexterity to handle routine PC maintenance

    Strong communication skills, including written, verbal and electronic communication abilities

    Sound interpersonal skills and the ability to supervise others

    Ability to work independently and display initiative to introduce innovations to research study

    Ability to identify problems and develop solutions

    Ability to prioritize tasks and set deadlines

    Functions with speed, precision and an understanding of theory behind tests and procedures.

    Knowledge of lab equipment's functionality and capability, including skills necessary for basic maintenance.

    Computer skills necessary to learn/use relevant software

    Familiarity with both PC- and Unix-based systems.

    Excellent customer service, teamwork, and communication skills.

    Good organizational skills to handle multiple tasks in a busy environment.

    Qualifications

    EDUCATION:



    • Bachelor's degree required.


    EXPERIENCE:

    Some laboratory experience strongly preferred but not required.
