Posting Summary |
The Riman Research Group at Rutgers University is seeking postdoctoral candidates to join a multidisciplinary team focused on sustainable materials manufacturing technology. Candidates will work with startups and large corporations developing hydrothermal-synthesis and -low-temperature-densification manufacturing processes for commercial manufacturing of building and infrastructure materials, advanced composite materials (ACMs), and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (
CCUS). Several but not all positions are available immediately.
*
What are the expected outcomes
o Solve research and development problems related to the separation of rare earth elements and the associated thermodynamics
o Work on research enabling the synthesis and processing of minerals, waste materials and polymers for making advanced composite materials
o Work on research related to carbon capture, storage and supply
*
How are the key duties performed
o Plan hypothesis-driven experiments
o Perform experiments related to synthesis and processing
o Oversee graduate students
o Build new instrumentation
o Write journal articles and patent applications

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
The candidates must have a Ph.D. in one or more of the following fields: chemical engineering, materials science and engineering, minerals processing, ceramics, polymers, and powder metallurgy. Strong analytical problem-solving skills, project management, communication, and collaboration skills are required. Candidates should possess skills in two or more of the following areas: hydrothermal synthesis, powder processing, densification methods, thermodynamics & kinetics simulations, materials characterization, and structure-property relationships. |
Certifications/Licenses |
Ph.D., in chemistry, chemical engineering or materials science and engineering. Bachelors degree in any of the aforementioned areas of expertise. |
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities |
Ph.D., in chemical engineering, materials science and engineering, minerals processing, ceramics, polymers, and powder metallurgy. Candidate must speak and write in fluent English. |
Equipment Utilized |
Experience with equipment involving materials synthesis, processing, materials characterization, and materials properties |
Physical Demands and Work Environment |
Experience working with air sensitive materials is important. |
Overview |
Candidate must be able to plan and execute experiments according to briefly stated statement of work, completing important milestones and providing deliverables according to the stated schedule. Progress reports, presentations, publications and patents must also be executed in a timely manner. When problems arise with the statement of work, candidate should be able to provide hypotheses that can be tested to solve the problems by designed experimentation.
The position involves reporting to government laboratory managers at a frequency ranging from 4-times/year to 12-times per year. The research should provide results highly impactful to infrastructure, advanced composite materials, and rare earth sustainability.
The administrative tasks are modest and mostly associated with creating reports, participation at meetings and establishing collaborations. The candidate needs to design, plan and execute experiments to meet the statement of work timeline. Any failure to do this could lead to program termination. |
