Job Summary:
The Assistant Wrestling Coach reports to the Head Wrestling Coach and assists in all aspects of the program; including but not limited to: recruiting, fundraising, player development and instruction, video analysis and scouting, preseason conditioning, and budget formulation. This is approximately a 9-month position payable over a 12-month period. Specific work schedule to be determined upon hire. This is a full-time benefits eligible appointment that is renewable on a contract basis.
Please note: Willingness and ability to work a non-traditional schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays as required.
Responsible for adhering to all Department and University policies and procedures, as well as the rules, regulations, bylaws and interpretations of the Big Ten Conference and the NCAA.
Specific Responsibilities:
Coaching
- Assist the head coach in coaching and training the Northwestern Wrestling team; develop and conduct all in-season and out-of-season sessions throughout the year as deemed necessary and appropriate.
- Help with the psychological preparation of team in both pre-game and post-game, develop motivational approach to practice and games.
- Develop and maintain statistics for individual athletes as well as the team.
- Work with student athletes individually developing specific skills that will help them be successful on the mat.
Administrative
- Must be fully knowledgeable and adhere to all rules and regulations of the NCAA, Big Ten Conference (as applicable) and Northwestern University as amended from time to time.
- Work with appropriate NUDAR staff in preparing for all home matches; procure officials, scorekeeper, etc.
- Cooperate with Athletic Communications and Marketing departments in publicizing and marketing the Northwestern Wrestling program; work with development and the wrestling club program to promote the program. Spearhead fundraising efforts.
- Assist the Head Wrestling Coach in all in-season management and administration including, but no limited to:
- Film editing and tagging of film collected at practice, competition and scouting of opponents
- Team meals and travel in conjunction with practice and training
- Manage player equipment needs
- Assist in home game team management
- Communicate game day information with visiting teams
- Organize team meals in conjunction with games
- Video and tag home games
- Meet opposing teams
- Manage the player pass list
- Assist in away game team management
- Set and confirm practice times
- Organize meals
- Communicate all logistics and travel plans to players
- Assist assistant coaches with all travel plans, including flights, hotels, transportation and pass lists
- Identifies service improvement opportunities that will better enable program/project to achieve its goals and objectives.
- Tracks equipment purchases and assists in negotiating pricing.
- Ensures all recruiting activities are tracked and approved as required by the Athletics Compliance Office; Prepares documentation as required.
Recruiting
- Assist in recruiting for the wrestling program; identify and contact qualified prospective student-athletes; schedule on-campus visits, establish itineraries and communicate regularly with coaches of the prospective student-athletes.
- Establish and maintain all files on prospective student-athletes.
Other
- In conjunction with the Head Coach, assist in coordinating annual camps.
- Work with U.S.A Wrestling
- Assist with Midlands Championships
- Attend meetings, conferences, training sessions, community service events, etc. as required.
- Report issues and concerns to the Head Coach and/or Sport Administrator and faithfully and diligently carry out other Department related duties as assigned.
- Demonstrate a cooperative attitude towards all sports in the Intercollegiate and Recreational programs.
- Responsible for adhering to all Department and University policies and procedures, as well as the rules, regulations, bylaws and interpretations of the Big Ten Conference and the NCAA.
- Responsible for adhering to all Department and University continuing education initiatives and required certifications and trainings.
Miscellaneous
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
- Previous experience as a wrestling coach
- Familiarity with and understanding of the college wrestling landscape
- Willingness and ability to work, as well as travel, mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
- Valid drivers license.

- Knowledge of rules and regulations of the NCAA, Big Ten Conference and Northwestern University preferred.

- Ability to establish engaging relationships within and across racialized and other marginalized communities
Target hiring range for this position will be between $38,000-- 50,000 per year. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
