Operating within the Office of Research and Innovation ( ORI), the University Attending Veterinarian ( UAV) unit is dedicated to ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare in research, testing, teaching, and production.

The UAV unit encompasses advocating for the well-being of animals and overseeing their clinical care throughout all stages of their lives. This includes rigorous monitoring and promotion of their health and welfare, and adhering to stringent ethical standards. The UAV unit ensures that veterinary care is both timely and comprehensive, with emergency services available around the clock, including after hours, weekends, and holidays.

By integrating these responsibilities into the broader framework of ORI's mission, the UAV contributes significantly to fostering a research environment that values ethical animal care and supports innovative research practices.
Essential Job Duties
The Technical and Administrative Training Specialist for the NCSU Animal Care Program will play a crucial role in ensuring that personnel involved in animal research are well-trained and compliant with Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee ( IACUC) protocols. This position involves both technical and administrative aspects of training, providing support and guidance to investigators throughout the IACUC protocol submission process and coordinating with the Committee to facilitate smooth protocol approvals and amendments. This position offers an opportunity to significantly impact the quality and compliance of laboratory animal research, fostering an environment of ethical research practices and professional development.
Essential Functions:
Training and Education

  • Develop and deliver intentional training seminars on general and specific topics related to laboratory animal research.
  • Coordinate with the Office of Research and Innovation (ORI) training and education team to provide and update online training modules.
  • Provide training sessions for IACUC members, onboarding new staff and students, and working with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) staff to ensure compliance.


Pre-Committee Analysis and Protocol Review

  • Conduct pre-committee analysis of research protocols to ensure completeness, regulatory compliance, and adherence to IACUC policies.
  • Review protocol amendments to identify training needs and schedule training sessions with laboratory personnel.

Support and Guidance

  • Support University Animal Veterinarians (UAV) by triaging cases, assessing protocol-related animal health concerns, and conducting facility rounds.
  • Serve as a mentor to personnel at all stages of the IACUC application process.
  • Stay informed about current legal and regulatory issues affecting laboratory animal research.

Communication and Documentation

  • Act as a liaison between the IACUC and research investigators, providing clear and detailed correspondence.
  • Maintain accurate and organized IACUC files and ensure ethical issues are addressed appropriately.

Collaboration and Coordination

  • Partner with sister units and web groups to ensure effective collaboration and synthesis of training efforts.
  • Maintain and update website documents related to IACUC protocols and training.

Other Responsibilities

  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the IACUC and its functions.


Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree with two years experience working in animal research or research administration.
Other Required Qualifications

  • Possess knowledge of federal and state regulations governing laboratory animal research.
  • Ability to perform a position in compliance with all requirements, regulations, and laws.
  • Ability to maintain high standards of work performance and maintain awareness with trends and influences.
  • Skill in making effective and timely decisions.
  • Ability to maintain productivity and use knowledge strategies to increase knowledge base.
  • Skill in exercising initiative, discretion and tact, resourcefulness, and sound judgment with an ability to solve problems and make decisions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts.
  • Interpret and understand written information and is able to listen attentively to verbal and non-verbal cues that lead to a deeper understanding.
  • Skill in writing detailed, clear, precise, and grammatically correct technical letters, memos and reports.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and demonstrates professional, ethical, respectful, and courteous behavior when interacting with others.
  • Ability to interact pleasantly and positively with others to meet customer expectations and provide follow up with customers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in animal welfare assurance or an institutional animal program facilities and procedures preferred.
  • Licensed Vet Tech preferred with optional Certified Professional IACUC Administrator (CPIA).
