Essential Job Duties |
The Camcore program and Forest Health Lab in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at NC State University invite applications for a full time Research Assistant position to be based on the university's main campus in Raleigh, NC. The Research Assistant will assist with cooperative research projects between NC State and the
USDA Forest Service focused on managing the health and sustainability of forest tree species native to the southeastern United States.
The primary duty of this position:
- Serve as the lead field and laboratory coordinator for Camcore's domestic conservation program with responsibilities focused on the planning and implementation of tree seed collections, establishment and management of conservation seed orchards, curation of stored seed resources, and the establishment and management of long-term field research plots.
- Provide field and laboratory support to ongoing research projects in the Forest Health Lab focused on the ecology and management of insect and disease threats to at-risk tree species.
- Extensive overnight travel throughout the southeastern United States and strenuous field work in mountain, Piedmont, and coastal forests.
- Activities include data collection, planting of seedlings, application of pesticides, tree climbing, and the use of chainsaws, brush saws, and other handheld mechanical equipment.
- Laboratory duties include microscopic examination of insect and plant specimens and data entry and management. Involvement in data summary and analysis and the preparation of technical and progress reports is also expected.
- Current funding is for 1 year with the possibility of extension dependent on the availability of future funding.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- MS in forestry, natural resources, conservation biology or closely related field or BS in plus three years of forestry related field work experience

- Highly self-motivated and creative
- Well-organized
- Work well with others and independently,
- Ability to take meticulous field notes and understand and follow experimental designs.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Previous experience/certification in tree climbing and plant identification skills
- Interest in becoming certified to operate unmanned aircraft systems (UAS)

USDA Forest Service Chainsaw Certification- Possession of a valid driver's license and ability to obtain a U.S. Government Vehicle Operators License is required
