Job Summary:

Klein College of Media and Communication's mission is to prepare the media creators of tomorrow for professional careers as well as scholarly pursuits through a dynamic combination of academic rigor and practical training within a large urban media market. The Klein College Advising office utilizes a caseload advising system following NACADA standards. Reporting to the Klein College of Media and Communication's Director of Academic Advising, the Academic Advisor I position in Klein College works under limited guidance while advising incoming, current and returning students concerning an appropriate academic schedule, choice of major, number of credit hours that may be taken, probation, and/or dismissal. Creates a communication plan for interacting with students in the assigned caseload. Contact with students may be on an individual or group basis. Collaborates with team members to meet regularly with students to discuss academic and professional goals. Prepares and presents new student orientation sessions, assists with course selections and registration activities. Works with faculty, staff and students to disseminate information regarding curriculum requirements, academic policy, and other related issues. May manage special projects related to advising and serve as a leader of that project to peers and/or peer advisors. Participates in the new student Klein Rising program by teaching a new student seminar class. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree and three (3) years experience in an academic setting in higher education. Experience working with student information systems.

Required Skills & Abilities:



  • Demonstrated customer service skills along with the ability to effectively work with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to take initiative and work independently.
  • Demonstrated experience in program development and implementation.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends occasionally.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.


Preferred:

Master's degree.
