What you will do
Role Overview:

The Pre-Construction Lead is responsible for reviewing and addressing the up-front construction and execution related issues early in the project life cycle to ensure all stakeholders are aligned so that projects are executed on time, and within budget. Oversees managing the RFI and RFP processes for all assigned projects to move them from the development phase to the execution phase. Formally turns over the executed contract to the Director of Construction for execution.

Main responsibilities:

  • Works with Development to help review and address up front construction and execution related issues earlier in the project lifecycle.
  • Assists efforts to establish detailed baseline Project schedules which incorporate the appropriate durations necessary for each of the respective teams to perform and complete their work including contingencies.
  • Provide input and review of all project schedules for investment approval projects.
  • Recommend and supports alternative contracting strategies as necessary to support project costs and schedules.
  • Ensure all project teams are adequately trained and utilizing project tools in a consistent manner to ensure projects are well documented
  • Support the completion of preliminary engineering specifications of construction and supply contracts
  • Contribute to the development of detailed project management and construction strategy including implementation plans, budgets, and schedules
  • Participate in the review and approval of vendors and suppliers
  • Coordinate with Project Controls staff regarding the scheduling and budgeting of the project
  • Manage the integration of development and execution functions for assigned projects
  • Support efforts to ensure consistent methods in support of project execution by interfacing with the DPM's and Directors of Construction
  • Ensure and coordinate all internal and external relations necessary to ensure the development and delivery of the project
  • Develop effective relationships with contractors and suppliers to support the execution strategy
  • Develop effective and supportive relationships with colleagues
  • Lead, manage, and supervise assigned staff
  • Additional duties as required

What are we looking for
Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field
  • 5+ years in project management in construction, engineering or a directly related field with 3+ years wind energy and/or solar energy specific experience
  • Demonstrated experience in building and maintaining critical path method schedules
  • Extensive experience with EPC and BOP construction contracting; including RFP process, bid review and negotiation of contract terms; renewable energy contracting experience highly preferred
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office software, including MS Project
  • Knowledge of construction management and constructing methods for large projects, contract management, procurement, and supply chain management, environmental and building permitting, and transportation logistics
  • Ability to interpret documents produced in AutoCAD, GIS, and other discipline-relevant software
  • Competency in Analytical Problem Solving, Strong Communication, Customer/Partner Relationships, and Technology Expertise (Preferred)
  • Holding a valid driver's license and ability to rent a car

Behavioral Requirements:

  • Ability to quickly understand the basics of a variety of subjects relating to wind and solar energy, including resource studies, environmental and cultural studies, transmission issues, public relations, public policy, sales, and civil and electrical engineering
  • Strong interpersonal skills and high attention to details
  • Understanding of basic financial principles (IRR, NPV, Depreciation, etc)
  • Ability to be self-motivated and perform job tasks in a relatively unstructured environment with little supervision
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask
  • Ability to travel extensively domestically and internationally, by plane and by car and with short notice
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Understanding of Microsoft products and/or complementing products preferred.
  • Competency in Analytical Problem Solving, Strong Communication, Customer/Partner Relationships, and Technology Expertise preferred

Physical demands & working conditions:

  • Sitting/Standing/Flexibility: Ability to frequently perform physical tasks including standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, bending, twisting, squatting, and reaching approximately 75% of the time while on wind farm sites; ability to stand and sit for 8 or more hours when in an office environment
  • Walking: Ability to walk up to 3 miles per day, including across unpaved and rough surfaces when on project sites
  • Speech/Reading: Ability to speak, read, and write English proficiently and deliver a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form
  • Lifting: Ability to lift items weighing up to 10 pounds
  • Vision/Hearing: Ability to interpret and follow a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form
  • Tolerance to Extreme Weather Conditions: Ability to work in adverse weather conditions 25% of the time while on project sites
  • Safety: Ability to understand and communicate safety precautions when necessary
